Rock-rap fest a Revolution of aggression
posted by Jas, 08/31/04
Review of PR show at the Coors Amphitheatre in Englewood, CO from Denver Post

Rock 'n' roll doesn't wait for the weekend. Neither do its fishnet-clad, spider-web-eyeliner fans. So, anyone who assumed a rock-rap festival on a school night would keep fans away from Projekt Revolution on Monday were just wrong. At its fiercest, Coors Amphitheatre's season finale had people stomping the pavement and flailing their sweaty limbs. But at times, the music was so loud and so guttural that it overwhelmed the amphitheater's acoustics, producing a muffled wall of sound.

But it was Linkin Park this crowd came to see, as shown by a nearly full house by the time the headliners took the stage. Tribal drumming, exotic rhythms and trip-hop beats enabled Chester Bennington and company to unleash a sonic fury. The crowd's singing during songs such as "Don't Stay," "Points of Authority" and "With You" was often louder than the band itself.

'My December' transcends genres

An interview with Josh Groban where he talked briefly about covering Linkin Park's 'My December'

Groban could have gone farther than he did: Included on an Internet-only version of Closer is a cover of the Linkin Park ballad, My December. "I just thought it was a gorgeous, haunting song, and one that could transcend genres," Groban said. "It wound up garnering a lot of press. Three months before the album was released, I was seeing headlines like 'Groban strolls in Linkin Park.' I started going, 'Whoa -- wait a minute: I don't want people to get the wrong idea about what I'm trying to do here.' I didn't want fans to think I was just doing it as a gimmick."

Linkin Park mention
posted by Jas, 08/30/04
An article from New York Daily about baseball player, Roger Clemens that mentions Linkin Park

A week ago Roger and Debbie took their two oldest sons, Koby and Kory on a triple date - the boys brought their new girlfriends - to a Linkin Park concert. Since Clemens warms up to "Faint", the Rocket went on stage, introduced the song and fired the crowd up a bit. Then the whole group met the band afterwards and Clemens commiserated with frontman Chester Bennington over how tough it is to wind down after a big performance. "You see, that's what I'm talking about when it's so hard for me to fall asleep after I pitch," Clemens told his sons, who laughed at him.

Later, he giggles himself and says, "I think they know they've got some pretty cool parents. But we did get the girls home before their curfews, I want you to know." Curfew or not, both Clemens and his wife admit it's hard to imagine George Steinbrenner being too happy with one of his pitchers rocking out to "Somewhere I Belong" the night before a game. And yet with the Astros, it's all part of the deal - a night after the concert, Clemens pitched seven innings and recorded his 13th win.

Linkin Park fans show their love - and expertise
posted by Jas, 08/29/04
Another review of the PR show at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI from the Journal Sentinel

East Troy - Midway through its hit single "Breaking the Habit," Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington forgot what he was supposed to sing. "It's good you guys know the songs better than we do," he told the crowd after the song was finished.

Whether they were exhausted from the day's muggy conditions or not paying too much attention, the fans didn't mind the minor slip-up. Linkin Park used that forgiveness to fuel an electric 19-song set that was the highlight of Friday's diverse Projekt Revolution bill at Alpine Valley Music Theatre. Opening with the smooth crunch of "Don't Stay," Linkin Park commanded a massive crowd that seemed a bit weary before the headliners took the stage. Co-vocalist and MC Mike Shinoda's rhymes had more bite, and his supplementary guitar work on "Somewhere I Belong" added sharp accents to an already potent rock single.

Die-hard Linkin Park fans seemed pleased at the inclusion of melodic gem "Step Up," a track from well before the group was selling millions of records and playing to packed amphitheaters. Bert McCracken, vocalist for The Used, who played earlier in the day, made an appearance during Linkin Park's final blitz of "Faint" and supplemented Bennington's screams with some edgy growling of his own.

Rap-rock tour takes retro turn
posted by Jas, 08/29/04
Another review of the PR show at Float-Rite Park in Sommerset, WI from St. Paul Pioneer Press

Hip-hop and hard rock may have seemed strange bedfellows when they first met in the '80s, but their aggression and dark outlooks soon proved complementary, as well as the ideal elixir for alarming parents. The resulting genre has grown in popularity to the point where Linkin Park (once called Hybrid Theory) has become among this decade's biggest-selling recording acts.

For the third straight summer, Linkin Park is headlining the Projekt Revolution tour, which shows off the California band's eclectic influences by inviting along specialists in punk, metal, ska and, of course, hip-hop. The tour stopped beside the Apple River at Float-Rite Park in Somerset, Wis., on Saturday, and the music, while admirable in its eclecticism, was a bit too retro to be revolutionary.

That said, it's easy to understand the appeal of Linkin Park's rap-rock mix. It has a softer touch than hard-core punk or rap and offers more melody than most metal, something that came through throughout Saturday's set, most clearly on the ballad-based "Breaking the Habit." It was an energetic and emotional set that clearly satisfied the crowd of 12,000 standing on Float-Rite's paved prairie.

Linkin Park, Korn darken Somerset's summer fun
posted by Jas, 08/28/04
Review of the PR show at Float-Rite Park in Sommerset, WI from Star Tribune

Perhaps the best sign of Projekt's less-than-summery vibe was in the cover songs that the headliners played as finales. Linkin Park chose Nine Inch Nails' harrowing death ballad "Wish," while Korn tore through Pink Floyd's tortured-childhood anthem "Another Brick in the Wall," turning it into a brutal, disenchanted chant. So much for "Good Vibrations." Where Korn had rampant moshing and headbanging, Linkin Park produced widespread sing-alongs with the melodic, catchy choruses in its downtrodden hits such as "Somewhere I Belong" and "Numb." With just under 90 minutes to play, the band was more focused than at its Xcel Energy Center concert in January. It still had time for pyrotechnics and a guest break dancer, though. How kool.

One-Track Mind: Linkin Park's "My December"
posted by Jas, 08/27/04
Denver Post reports: Last week, pop sensation Josh Groban covered "My December" toward the end of his sold-out show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Women in their 40s cried their way through the song, marveling at its simple introspection and blubbering at Groban's every marvelous! note. Teenagers in the audience, of which there were many, had the opposite reaction. They raised their hands, shaped into the sign of the beast, in support of the righteous Linkin Park B-side ballad they've grown to love.

Best Buy in-store appearance meet and greet story

Here's Mikaboog's meet and greet experience at Best Buy in Chicago posted on the LPUMB. Thanks Mika.

Hye guys, it's Mika. It was so awesome to wait in line for hours with everyone today at Best Buy in Chicago. (FYI: I was the girl with the "I'm with the band" shirt on. ) I was also the girl that was complaining about my full bladder (lol I'm *such* a dork) right before I was to meet LP....well, Chester heard me and then word got around to all the other band members.

Joe proceeded to poke my stomach to try to make me pee myself...and Rob and Chester started making water sounds. Nice eh? Yea, they were making fun of me...it was all fun and games until seriousness came upon Joe as he pulled out 3 100-dollar bills...offering me this cash if I just pee my pants in front of everyone! Everyone around me started egging me on, and needless to say, I didn't do it...

HAD TO MAINTAIN MY DIGNITY.... but it was really funny and I had an awesome time joking around with the guys. They have an awesome sense of humor if you, yourself are relaxed! It's an awesome thing to have convos with them...thank GOODNESS I'm chit-chatty. But yes, 300 bucks to pee in my pants? Good offer?? (I noticed Joe asked a few people after me to soil themselves too...hahaha)

Anyways, point is, appreciate the guys for who they are, DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT A THING, and be thankful to the LPU and the band themselves for giving us such awesome opportunities for no reason. Other than L-O-V-E!! lol

Review of the PR show at the Verizon Wireless Ampitheater in Bonner Springs, KS, from Kansas City Star

Six years ago, Korn headlined the arena-sized "Family Values" tour. These days, Davis seems grateful to be the runner-up in a show headlined by a younger but more popular band like Linkin Park — so grateful that he joined Linkin Park during its encore version of "One Step Closer." Though its formula is pretty basic (rapper/DJ/ hard-rock singer), L.P. deserves credit for its execution. It has an impressive way of juggling tempos, progressions and elements from two disciplines and making it all sound fluid and palatable. Despite the aggression they muster, however, little of it feels genuine or threatening. Some anecdotal evidence: Right after sledge-hammering a cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Wish," which includes the line, "I hate everyone," lead vocalist Chester Bennington stopped to scold a few fans up front for being too rough and rowdy: "We're all friends here," he preached. He was being real, but it's not the kind of rhetoric you expect at a so-called revolt.

Project Revolution concert review

Review of the PR show at the UMB Bank Pavilion in Maryland Heights, MO, from St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Ultimately, the memories of the Projekt Revolution tour stop at UMB Bank Pavilion will revolve around one thing and one thing only: the weather, a constant and soaking presence throughout the late afternoon and evening. Though the wild weather generally slowed for headliners Linkin Park, the two-thirds-full UMB Bank Pavilion was treated to another shoddy sound mix, as guitarist Brad Delson nearly drowned out every other member of the six-piece group. While the group's radio-friendly, pop-rap-metal was met with a near-unanimous support from the crowd - tracks like "Somewhere I Belong" were able to cut through the technical challenges - the group ultimately seemed an anticlimactic afterthought, following Korn's forceful, if uneven, 65 minutes onstage. Vocalist Chester Bennington, in particular, seemed off-kilter, registering a bushel of bum notes, despite a winning, whirling-dervish stage presence. By Linkin Park's arrival, though, the rain-soaked fans were undoubtedly just happy to be in the presence of their heroes, with lightning still dancing in the West County skies.

Minneapolis Star Tribune reports: After opening for Metallica's Summer Sanitarium tour last year, Linkin Park is headlining its own summer mega-tour, Projekt Revolution. Expect the full, pyrotechnic rap-metal assault from the California hitmakers, and more of the same from Korn, which is earning raves for its cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" at other tour stops. Snoop Dogg should go over as well here as he did with the frat boys in "Old School," and the Used are using the tour to preview a buzzed-about new album. After playing the smaller America West Arena last year, the tour has added a second stage, on Cricket's outdoor layout. It's a different face for concert crowds

Review of PR concert at the The Woodlands Pavilion in Texas from Houston Chronicle

When Linkin Park and Korn shared the stage with hip-hop star Snoop Dogg at The Woodlands Pavilion Sunday, it was an eclectic bill. The only thing more diverse was the audience jumping around in front of them.

Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington has taken notice of the trend. "I hate to say it, but I didn't see any black people at Ozzfest," he said of the 2003 tour featuring Ozzy Osbourne. "On this tour, there is quite a mix of ethnic diversity, but also among genres. There seems to be some sort of segregationalism, saying that you can't love Ozzy if you love Jay-Z. That's totally ridiculous."

More than any other, Bennington's group has popularized the hybridization of American musical tastes to match the analogous crossover of pop culture. Bennington's passionate shrieks complement the stable rationality of co-singer Mike Shinoda's rhymes, which together create a harmonious mix of rock's outward defiance and hip hop's inner strength.

"It's very powerful and very beautiful," said Anthoula Politis, a 27-year-old student from Greece. "It kind of releases something inside of you, and expresses feelings that appeal to every person." "We are fans of music, too," said Bennington, "and we don't just listen to one genre of music. And that's broadened our base of people listening to our music and people who come to our shows. It's really made touring for us consistent over the years, rather than hit and miss, in the sense that people aren't going to get bored of coming because we'll have everything from punk to hip hop to ska."

Linkin Park tops Revolution roster

Review of PR concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion, in Spring, TX from Houston Chronicle

The summer of 2004 was nearly remembered as the year Lollapalooza was abruptly canceled, possibly never to return. But now it's likely to be remembered as the birth of Project Revolution, hosted by rock 'n' rap headliners Linkin Park. Sunday at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion a muddy, sweaty horde of kids and young adults enjoyed the debut of this all-day concert festival. Project Revolution gathered a lineup of hard-charging styles that complemented Linkin Park's mix of metal blasts and bass beats well. Joining the band were Korn, Snoop Dogg, the Used, Less Than Jake, Ghostface, Funeral for a Friend and an army of second-stage baby bands.

Lollapalooza's two-day lineup of classic modern rock and jam bands collapsed under its own weight. But Project Revolution's roster of still-vital veterans and new blood was broad and strong enough to bring diverse fans in early and keep them rockin' for nearly nine hours. At press time, Linkin Park had only been onstage for about 30 minutes, but tracks like Don't Stay and Lying From You sealed the group's ascendency to keepers of the rock-rap bridge. Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda's wails and rhymes were a perfect complement.

Linkin Park offer No Warning from their Machine Shop
posted by Jas, 08/22/04
VH1 reports: Originally, No Warning were booked for the first three weeks of the tour, but they've been so well-received that Linkin Park have asked them to stay on for the rest of the trek, which ends September 5 in Mountain View, California. Of course, being the first band signed to Linkin Park's Machine Shop label might have played a small role in that decision.

Bringing No Warning on Projekt Revolution is part of Linkin Park's strategy to build a buzz for the band before releasing its yet-untitled new disc on August 28, and it epitomizes the Park's strategy for supporting the groups they sign in a grass-roots fashion before their records hit the streets.

"We love these guys," Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda said. "The rock world needs something that's as heavy, melodic and passionate as they are. They come from the hardcore world, and they're not f---ing around. They're serious about what they do, and they can be really angry with their music, which is so heavy. But at the same time, there's something that sticks with you about it, whether it be the riffs or the lyrics."

Linkin Park discovered No Warning after some mutual friends handed DJ Joseph Hahn a demo of the band. After playing it for his bandmates, everyone agreed that releasing the explosive punk outfit's new album would be a great way to introduce the world to Machine Shop, which will be distributed through the label's parent company, Warner Bros.

Unlike many established artists who are given vanity labels so they can go play A&R man, Linkin Park's members are taking their roles as record-label execs very seriously. In addition to signing acts, Shinoda says his band has recruited artists for development deals, in which Linkin Park finance and coordinate the recording of an act's demo before putting it in the studio to record a proper album.

"Our label is geared more toward the artists' interests, not [the interests of] a bunch of suits sitting behind desks telling artists how they should sell records," Shinoda said. "Although we want to be able to get their music out to a mass audience, we definitely want to focus on the creative first and foremost to make sure that it's an art-driven label."

Rock, rap pound Smirnoff crowd

Review of the PR concert at Smirnoff Music Centre in Dallas, TX from Star-Telegram

Linkin Park's set was a propulsive barrage of sound, light, personality and energy that blasted away at the crowd of about 16,000. Lead screamer Chester Bennington and rapper Mike Shinoda wove a vocal tapestry of angst and melody. Bennington unleashed his vein-bursting yowl and completed a series of spinning jumps across the stage. Shinoda was slightly more subdued and was a nice balance with his smoother vocal delivery.

Blabbermouth.net reports: Drummer Rob Bourdon recently told Launch Radio Networks that one of the major highlights of this summer's Projekt Revolution tour has been the chance to perform with Korn every night. "It's great to be able to share the stage with a really great live band like Korn, you know. For me, I've been watching them since before we were ever signed, so now to be sharing a stage with Korn, it's definitely a mind-blowing experience. And playing after a band that's as great as they are really pushes us to be, like, a hundred percent every night."

The station has also another contest going on where listeners can call the station or log on to their website when they hear the codeword "Rally Linkin Park" on the radio to get concert tickets. That's not all, those who are going to buy tickets for the show will have to bring along 1kg of food for charity to help the unfortunate people in Brazil. That's a great way to sell tickets don't you think? you get tickets and do something good at the same time.

A wet, wild revolution
posted by Jas, 08/19/04
A review of the PR concert in Tampa, FL.

Rain almost halted the revolution. A storm erupted Wednesday afternoon over the outdoor Ford Amphitheatre, soaking many of the fans seated in the uncovered lawn section of the venue. As an onstage DJ kept spinning tunes, the crowd, there to see the summer's much ballyhooed Projekt Revolution tour, featuring multiple acts, danced to thematic songs such as Rock You Like A Hurricane and Should I Stay Or Should I Go?. Would the show go on?

Linkin Park closed the show with a busy set. The rap-rock band features both a lead singer, Chester Bennington, and emcee Mike Shinoda, rapping in a strong baritone while whiny-voiced Bennington sings of his ennui and a sense of alienation - an odd combination, but when it works, it's compelling. Fueled by skittering hip-hop beats, the duo galloped between the band's musicians and incited fans with call-and-response sessions. It was controlled chaos. It was perfect for a revolution of this kind.

Putting back the melodies into heavy music

Judas Priest frontman, Rob Halford mentions Linkin Park in this interview with Chicago Tribune

On the state of metal since he quit Priest: "A lot of newer metal bands tend to jump into each other's territory, and things become blurred. So you have to strive to be different, and they go to extremes. Priest stands out from that because we've got songs that have stood the test of time. If you can whistle the song in a shower, you're in great shape. We came out of a generation in England that was absolutely immersed in melody. Occasionally you get remarkable things that come along like Linkin Park. When I first heard them, I thought, 'Oh, God, finally someone is putting some melodies back into heavy music.'."

Nothing new in Revolution tour
posted by Jas, 08/18/04
A review of PR concert at the Sound Advice Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, FL, from Palm Beach Post

The Projekt Revolution tour, a showcase of about a dozen hard-rock, hip-hop and rap-metal acts that played to a crowd of 15,000 Tuesday night at Sound Advice Amphitheatre, might more accurately be called Project Rehash. After all, there's nothing really new about the artists it presents — or the idea of mixing and matching rap and rock. Korn, one of the featured rap-metal headliners, has been around for about a decade. Even Linkin Park, the evening's closer, is well past the release of its second platinum-selling album.

Linkin Park put its genre-bending style on full display. Like Korn, this is a band that rarely strays from the subject of youthful angst, but its musicianship is marked by something subtler. You can really hear the rock when the group rocks. And you can hear the rap when it raps. And yet, these seemingly disparate elements fuse marvelously. Perhaps there's nothing quite new about this revolution, but Linkin Park still makes it seem fresh.

Yeah, we used to play shows together before we were both unsigned. I saw them play teen centers and house parties and likewise for us. They were at my parents' house when he played our first show in my parents' backyard. The funny thing is, the first show we did play with them was in my parents' backyard in '95 and the opening band was Brad Delson (Linkin Park's guitar player). We were trying to get his band started. I look back and we have this video of the three bands playing and all three ended up getting record deals, obviously. The first band would eventually spawned into Linkin Park. The second band was Audiovent and us and Incubus was there; guys from Onesidezero were there. There were like six or seven eventual major label signed acts there in my backyard just chillin'

A review of the PR concert at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, OH from Cleveland Free Times.

Tour sponsors Linkin Park played a solid hour and a half and maintained its usual standards for sparkling, dynamically diverse, heavy rock 'n' roll. For the most part, it stuck with its best-known tunes from its two albums, its 15-song set included a parade of tunes like "Numb," "Somewhere I Belong," "In the End" and the distinctive hit ballad "Breaking the Habit." Though tunes like "From the Inside" provided plenty of dynamic range and contrast between Mike Shinoda's spitfire raps and Chester Bennington's sweetly soulful vocals, the band mostly kept the energy level high with tunes such as the sharply rhythmic "Step Up." Shinoda conducted numerous audience singalongs, ending up in the crowd several times, and an acrobatic dancer named Eric joined the band on stage during "Nobody's Listening."

Linkin Park shows gentler side of hard rock
posted by Jas, 08/12/04
A review of the PR concert at the at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, IL from Chicago Tribune

The conspicuous cancellation of the entire Lollapalooza tour and slow summer ticket sales in general don't bode well for the future of the all-day outdoor music festival. Then again, the "Projekt Revolution" tour, spearheaded by Linkin Park, seems to be doing OK. The tour, now in its third year, brought a more than respectable number of fans to the Tweeter Center Saturday, no doubt attracted by a bill that ran from Snoop Dogg to Korn to the Used and Wu-Tang rapper Ghostface.

But the appeal of "Projekt Revolution" isn't quite as revolutionary as the name implies, given its resemblance to the "Family Values" tours, of which both Linkin Park and Korn are veterans. Those concerts featured a similar mix of hard rock and just a little hip-hop, a formula that appeals to a cross-section of disaffected youth and teenage rebels. And it doesn't hurt that right now there are few rock acts as popular as Linkin Park.

Following Korn, headliners Linkin Park seemed much less menacing, the band's pop rap-rock hooks and polite onstage disposition very much at odds with Korn's take-no-prisoners approach. Still, those hooks and melodies are what set Linkin Park apart, and they account for much of the band's popularity. Saving up such ubiquitous hits as "Faint" and "Breaking the Habit" until later in the evening, Linkin Park kept the crowd enthusiastic and energetic throughout its set, its anthems of anomie sung by everyone, from 12-year-old girls to the venue's unusually rapt security guards.

NewTimesbpb.com reports: With a concert festival named Projekt Revolution, there is an implied guarantee that madness will ensue at said event. Why? Only the truly mad would switch out the letter c for the letter k in the word Project. Consider it the illegitimate child who was conceived when Lollapalooza, Warped Tour, and Ozzfest had a ménage à trois after a long night of moshing, skanking, and smoking blizzunts. Linkin Park, Snoop Dogg, Korn, the Used, and Less Than Jake are the headliners, with Ghostface, Funeral for a Friend, M.O.P., and Downset rounding out the second stage. And they're all gonna put the "angst" in gangsta. You must be thinking, "Is there really a need for another huge summer festival?" You wouldn't be alone. Maybe the bands are so consumed with madness that they required a new festival to show how mad they are. What if this is only the beginning of the revolution and the Linkin Parks and Korns intend to change all of the

Listen to LP and Busta Rhymes mash up on WXRK (92.3 FM)
posted by Jas, 08/11/04
Tune in to WXRK (92.3 FM) on Friday at 10 pm to listen to mash up songs featuring Linkin Park and Busta Rhymes, Metallica and Bone Crusher and Rage Against the Machine and DMX. Here's a report from New York Daily News

Anyone who still thinks rap music is just one isolated style of popular music might want to listen to the radio this weekend to be reminded otherwise. WXRK (92.3 FM) is breaking out a new show called "Mash-Up Radio" Friday at 10 p.m., with DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill mixing rock and rap by combining vocal tracks from one song with instrumental tracks from another. "Mash-Up," popular in Europe for years, has lately crossed the pond, attracting Internet and tape mixers plus club deejays.

K-Rock had a long run with a mash-up that mixed Linkin Park and Jay-Z, notes operations manager Rob Cross, and that led him to give the style its own hour. "It's the best of both worlds," he says. "It's new and it's familiar. I think most people like it, but even the ones who hate it will find it really, really interesting. "Best-case scenario: You love both songs. Worst-case scenario: You say, 'What have they done to that Linkin Park song?' and tell your friends to listen to see how bad it is. I can live with that." Some of the artists Muggs will combine Friday include Metallica and Bone Crusher, Linkin Park and Busta Rhymes, Rage Against the Machine and DMX.

Linkin Park tour not kutting edge
posted by Jas, 08/11/04
A review of the PR concert at the at the Post-Gazette Pavilion in Burgettstown, PA from Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette.

The official Web site for Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution Tour touts the "revolutionary, cutting-edge talent" appearing at shows. Monday's concert at the Post- Gazette Pavilion proved to be far less earth-shattering than billed. Apparently the revolution this tour imagines features both rap and rock, only one female artist, largely apolitical content and bands that substitute the letter k for the letter c when spelling. Not only is none of this new, it speaks to the sexist, staid, egocentric state of music aimed at the young, angry and alienated.

Linkin Park were really the only act allowing "rock and hip-hop [to] collaborate" as they rapped in "Step Up." While some of their songs and onstage videos featured a generally anti-authoritarian theme, most explored identity issues ("Numb," "Figure .09") or relationships ("Don't Stay," "From The Inside"). Linkin Park's songs never really explored life's dark or blurry edges the way the best hip-hop does, nor rocked with any true authority or menace. Most fans should know by now that if you're looking for a musical revolution, you're far more likely to find it in an out-of-the-way club or basement than in a concert shed built for mass-marketed acts and audiences of 20,000.

Why can't bands that make clever music get played on the radio?
The media underestimates the intelligence of the American public. If you're getting Linkin Park crammed down your throat 4,000 times a day, pretty soon you're like, "It's pretty lame, but you gotta admit, it's kinda catchy." It seems to be getting worse every year. And look what's happening: Radio ratings are going down, people are turning to satellite radio and to the Internet because you just have more choice.

United for a blistering revolution
posted by Jas, 08/09/04
Review of PR concert at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, IL from Chicago Sun-Times.

The principals in the Projekt Revolution Tour have more in common than rage and an obsession with synapse-scrambling bass -- each act had the kismet to arrive at the exact moment the music culture was thirsting for them. Snoop Dogg dropped his seminal "Doggystyle" to crest the G-funk wave in 1993; Korn and Linkin Park seemed to materialize almost on the very day that thunderous, aggressive rap-metal first invaded the nation's consciousness.

Linkin Park is probably the majority, the AV club whose members probably aren't entirely right, but seem awful nice and will give up algebra answers if you ask. Packaged together, their revolution was unquestionably energized, and at the Tweeter Center on Saturday night, each made a compelling case for the staying power of their own corner of angry music.

No one's done rap-metal self-help more lucratively than Linkin Park, though, and the sextet followed the barrage of Korn by coming off as, well, just about the nicest band in the history of time. Their sound's powered by low-end theory and throat-shredding choruses just as much as their predecessors, but lead singer Chester Bennington and rapper Mike Shinoda used their between-song banter to thank everybody in sight and gush over their singing voices (at one point, Bennington invited a young girl onstage to provide a pretty good stab at lead vocals).

Where Korn invites uncontrolled fury, Linkin Park aligns itself with the lonely and the distant, and as such comes off more accessible and a little whinier, particularly when Bennington handles the vocals ("Points of Authority"). Live anyway, Shinoda's verses -- such as his stomp through the obscure "Step Up" -- are a better fit. But when the band fired on all cylinders -- such as on a brutal "Lying From You" and an accelerated "Faint" -- they succeeded in closing the night by putting the outcast front and center.

There's no way to find out what's inside you
Until you fall into the hole
You dug for yourself while you slept here
Too young, too selfish, too cold

And when you find out what's been waiting
The moment you open your eyes
You'll see your true reflection
The very first time in your life

You cannot fight what's in you
This will not be goodnight [x2]

Cry to yourself
Nothing will help
It's too late to change what's been done
You do what you've always done best
You run

Into the hole you fall deeper
Deeper the faster you run
It won't stop until you accept it
Accept everything that you've done

You cannot fight what's in you
This will not be goodnight [x2]

Cry to yourself
Nothing will help
It's too late to change what's been done
You do what you've always done best

Linkin Park holds sway in big-budget show
posted by Jas, 08/07/04
Review of the PR concert at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, OH from The Plain Dealer

Like crowd-pleasing disc jockeys at a very large party, Linkin Park played the Blossom Music Center stage like a giant turntable Thursday. The band's Projekt Revolution delivered - as promised - a spinning of musical acts that reflect the sextet's varied tastes as well as its own hybrid style. The sextet brought to life the hip-hop-inflected pop-metal of its best-selling albums "Hybrid Theory" and "Meteora," melding nether-region-rumbling bass with skittering beats and industrial-strength power chords.

Singer Chester Bennington worked the stage like a fly-weight prizefighter, feigning jabs as he bobbed and weaved around the multitiered set on songs such as "Somewhere I Belong." Emcee Mike Shinoda led the packed house through old-school call-and-response segments before tickling the ivories for a hushed reading of "Breaking the Habit." And The Used's Bert McCracken, a ringer for Kurt Cobain, rejoined the party for a throat-shredding performance of "Faint."

But Linkin Park's set involved more than a musical cross-pollination. With considerable ingenuity and a production budget rivaling the NASA space program, the band fostered its own arts community onstage. A break-dancer performed a jaw-dropping display of serial back flips. A graffiti artist spray-painted a large canvas that he later bestowed on one very-stoked fan. And a high-definition video screen allowed the band to merge with its own cinematic creations. The short films featured recurring imagery of rogue graffiti artists tagging walls, then escaping from shadowy forces. The simple message: Self-expression can set you free, even on a tight budget. Maybe next time Linkin Park will carry the conceit further and let me write my review from the stage.

Review of the PR concert at Verizon Wireless Music Center in Noblesville, IN from IndyStar

Linkin Park performed for an audience of 15,500 Friday night at Verizon Wireless Music Center, but the band sidestepped the promise of its ambitiously titled tour. "Projekt Revolution" offered no social or political commentary beyond some staged video of graffiti taggers receiving a beatdown -- at least through the first hour of Linkin Park's 90-minute performance. It's probably too much to ask for a life-changing experience from one of music's most calculated hit machines.

As a half-and-half hybrid of rap and metal, Linkin Park showcases mild-mannered MC Mike Shinoda and mild-mannered screamer Chester Bennington. The songs rarely vary in compositional structure, sonic texture or lyrical content: "You like to think you're never wrong"; "I won't trust myself with you"; "Shut up when I'm talking to you." These guys are masters at verbalizing angst, but as revolutionaries they're less than failures. They don't even try.

Some 13 titles by artists like David Bowie (news) and Linkin Park were sold in Boston and Seattle. The idea is to put music on the CD side and concert, interview or recording session video on the DVD. They have sold for about $18.99 in retail stores. But before the products can be ready for mass markets, several issues remain including a contract dispute between a technology developer and manufacturer and questions dealing with the licensing of "CD" and of music rights.

My, how times change. For more than a decade, X-103 has been a major force in radio as part of the corporate umbrella of Indy stations that includes WFBQ-FM (94.7). The station's annual X-Fest concert at Verizon Wireless Music Center, 12880 E. 146th St., is always a big draw. This year, the Projekt Revolution Tour joins forces with X-Fest for an eclectic bill that includes rap/movie star Snoop Dogg, metal crunchers Korn and hard rockers The Used. DallasNews.com has an article about the failed Lollapalooza festival and there's a mention of the Projekt Revolution tour with quotes from Rob Bourdon.

Linkin Park also started out planning just another summer tour, before realizing the huge supply of potential opening acts, says drummer Rob Bourdon. "We wanted to go out and do a headlining tour this summer, and play outdoors," he says. "We weren't thinking of putting a whole festival together. The original plan was maybe to have a couple bands before us. But as we started to put it together, we realized there was not as much going on this summer as usual." Things snowballed. "We wanted to do try and do something bigger, and it grew one band at a time," he says. "We decided to have a whole separate village with a bunch of activities, in between bands or before the bands started. It turned into a whole big festival. And it all started off with us wanting to go tour and play outside this summer." In other words, they took a page from Lollapalooza's book. "Lollapalooza is a great show, and successful," he says. "It's sad that it had to be canceled this year. ... Lollapalooza was one of the first festival shows I ever went to, a long time ago, before I was ever in Linkin Park."

A short review of the Blossom Music Center show in Cuyahoga Falls, OH from Clevescene.com

The eight-hour Projekt Revolution festival is a lot like Lollapalooza once was: a long, eclectic rundown of name-brand, rock-the-house acts, one following the other in rapid succession. Rock, represented by the Used and Less Than Jake, is in the minority here. Two of hip-hop's modern greats, Ghostface and Snoop Dogg, provide the street cred. And still three rap-rock greats grace the bill -- reunited pioneers Downset, braided breakthrough stars Korn, and last-men-standing Linkin Park.

Linkin Park puts its unique spin on Revolution concert tour
posted by Jas, 08/05/04
The Plain Dealer report: Linkin Park represents a new breed of band. More like high-tech animators than rock 'n' roll animals, the six largely teetotaling members of the hip-hop-inflected pop-metal group attack every project with an obsessive attention to detail and a strong work ethic. Now in its third year, the Projekt Revolution festival features 10-plus acts representing Linkin Park's relatively broad taste, from nu-metal pioneers Korn to rap icon Snoop Dogg to ska-punk veterans Less Than Jake.

"It's not a revolution in the sense of revolting against anything," explains Bennington. "It's more like a revolution in the sense of a constant spinning and mixing of genres and musical styles. The idea is that there's constant movement musically, from punk to alternative to ska to reggae to hip-hop to metal. You're going to get a little of each when you go to Projekt Revolution." A Rock the Vote booth is among the exhibits in the festival's "Revolution Village," but beyond encouraging fans to vote, Linkin Park doesn't get political. Instead, the band's music focuses on resolving inner turmoil. The group's latest single, "Breaking the Habit," represents what Bennington calls "the politics of being yourself."

"I don't think there is a solution for fixing the world," he says. "But there is a way you can make yourself happy. Everything is a choice. You can either choose to hate or choose not to hate. And that's about as political as I get."

Festival embraces the light, the dark, the mud

A review of the Tweeter Center show from the Philadelphia Inquirer.

You haven't witnessed formulaic until you've seen Linkin Park perform a set of carbon-copy songs, such as "Numb" and "Crawling," that rarely deviate from the techno-laced intro + swelling pre-chorus + shout-along- refrain formula. Korn and Linkin Park were the headliners on the Projekt Revolution tour, a daylong, metal-leaning festival that played to a near-sellout crowd Tuesday at the Tweeter Center.

A late-afternoon downpour cut short an underwhelming set by the Welsh post-hardcore quintet Funeral for a Friend on the "Revolution Village" side stage, and washed out hip-hopper Ghostface's performance altogether. Attractions such as video game kiosks and a batting cage were canceled. But it didn't stop some lager-fueled fans on the lawn from participating in a mud Olympics, featuring mud tossing, mud sliding, and coed mud wrestling. Nothing says summer festival fun like a little Girls Gone Wild-meets-Fight Club action.

Linkin Park rewarded the crowd's endurance with a viciously tight set that dug deep for the Internet-only rarity "Step Up" (one of the few songs from the metal alchemists that is more hip-hop than aggro-metal), and it even brought up a fan named Billy to play guitar on "Faint." The guys get points for giving back to the loyalists, but not enough to give its derivative nu-metal a passing grade.

Revolution: A KoRn festival
posted by Jas, 08/04/04
A review of the Darien Lake show from The Buffalo News. They sang 'One Step Closer' twice? wow! that must be awesome

Maybe they weren't the headliners of last Tuesday's twin staged "Projekt Revolution Tour" at Six Flags Darien Lake, but KoRn definitely stole the show. "Projekt Revolution", put together by and starring Linkin Park, was meant to be a showcase of many of the diverse names of pop culture. And it proved to be a huge success.

Linkin Park took the stage around 9:30. Rapper for the band, Mike Shinoda, set the scene by playing a prolonged piano part to single, "Breaking the Habit." Not as energetic as I expected the band to be, but still a good performance. Lead singer Chester Bennington's voice soared on songs like "Numb", "In the End" and "Crawling", and the band threw in a few surprises like older song, "Step Up" featuring lots of audience participation, and a crowd-pleasing Nine Inch Nails cover. Linkin Park closed out the night with loud explosions and two encores of breakthrough single, "One Step Closer." Yes, folks, you read correctly. Two encores of the same single.

A mixed bag: rap, metal and rock
posted by Jas, 08/04/04
A not so favourable review of the Jones Beach show from Newsday.

Mixing rap and rock is apparently not the same as mixing black and white. Anyone hoping for a diverse crowd at a concert that put rappers (Snoop Dogg, Ghostface) on the same bill as rockers (Linkin Park, The Used) must have been disappointed at the sea of white faces that flooded Jones Beach. One white kid complained out loud, "Dude, there's no black guys here. Maybe, like, three."

Linkin Park borrowed the rhythms and delivery of rap, but rarely its attitude. Where rappers tend to boast and bluster, rap-rockers tend to mope and moan. (For some reason, rap- rockers have a worse outlook than even the average grunge singer.) During its 80-minute set, Linkin Park delivered one anguished line after another. "I tried so hard/And got so far/But in the end, it doesn't even matter," Chester Bennington sang, hunched over as if in pain. On "Somewhere I Belong," Mike Shinoda rapped, "I'd get lost in the nothingness inside of me."

Linkin Park's music often felt more shrewd than sincere. The cathartic-yet-catchy songs invariably followed the same formula: Shinoda's rapped verses, Bennington's sung chorus and a heavy, bouncy beat. The one departure was a cover of "Wish" by Nine Inch Nails, a band whose lyrics laid the groundwork for Linkin Park's: "I'm the one without a soul," Bennington howled. "I'm the one with this big --."

Concert Review: Projekt Revolution

A review of the Jones Beach show in Long Island, NY from Hollywood Reporter

Crossing boundaries of punk, rap and metal, Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution Tour packed the outdoor venue at Jones Beach for eight hours of angst-ridden rock and hip-hop fun. Boasting a roster steeped in diversity, Snoop Dogg, Korn and Linkin Park had their work cut out for them, with the Used, Ghostface Killah and Less Than Jake as openers. But it was clear by the time the Revolution ended at 11 p.m. that the show belonged to Snoop.

Headliners Linkin Park arrived to a deafening roar as the six-member, multiplatinum purveyors of teen angst throttled the crowd with new songs and recent hits including "Don't Stay," "Somewhere I Belong," "In the End" and "Crawling." Amid lavish sets, videos and grand piano accompaniment on "Breaking the Habit," Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda effortlessly shared vocals high and hoarse. But technical difficulties scuttled the energy when Snoop came out to sing on "Step Up." His microphone failing, Snoop continued on as the confused audience quieted. This went unnoticed by the band as they finished with a cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Wish." The encore of "One Step Closer" featured Korn's Davis, who fared better with his microphone. Although Linkin Park satisfied and Korn rocked, it was Snoop who left everyone wanting more.

A review of the Jones Beach show in Long Island, NY from New York Post, calling 'Breaking the Habit' a love gone bad song, lol!! I never thought of BTH as a love song, well from another point of view I guess we can call it that.

In a summer when ticket prices have skyrocketed and tours have fallen apart before they started, the Projekt Revolution festival was downright revolutionary. Monday's day-long event at Jones Beach featured rapper Snoop Dogg, Korn and Linkin Park — and, at $49 a ticket, cost less than a T-shirt at Madonna's Garden party last month. Linkin Park was the highlight. For nearly two hours, the SoCal metal/rap act was terrific, serving up a top program from its songbook — most of its two multiplatinum albums, "Hybrid Theory" and "Meteora," plus unrecorded tunes like the heavy hip-hop tune "Step Up."

That last was souped-up by a Snoop Dogg cameo that would have been a lot better if the sound guys hadn't slipped up — the rapper's mike wasn't plugged in until nearly the end of the song. Ouch. The fans loved it when Linkin Park played old hits such as "Crawling," but the band was at its best with "Meteora" music, like "Somewhere I Belong" and the love-gone-bad song "Breaking the Habit."

Breaking The Habit DVD
posted by Jas, 08/02/04
My BTH DVD from Amazon.com arrives today and here's a little info about it. The manga book is included in the DVD, there are three tracks in the DVD, the BTH video, the making of the video as shown on MTV, nothing more, nothing less and a video clip of the band during rehearsal, playing BTH, it's the video shot by Kimo Proudfoot. So that's it, if you must buy the DVD, buy it for the manga book 'coz it explains the drawings and scenes from the video. I remember when I first saw the BTH video, I was a little confused and wondering what certain image means, so the book explains it. The book also contains bio of each band member, the same info posted on LinkinPark.com and the best thing is it has a hand written lyrics of BTH by Mike.

Rap, Metal better as solo acts
posted by Jas, 08/02/04
A not so positive review of the Hartford, CT show from the Harford Courant.

It's Linkin Park's tour and the band can do what it wants, but the rap-metal outfit really should consider surrendering top billing to Snoop Dogg or Korn. The former does rap, the latter plays metal, and they put on the best - if very different - performances Saturday when the Projekt Revolution tour stopped at the ctnow.com Meadows Music Theater in Hartford.

Linkin Park, on the other hand, comes off as the music industry's attempt to build a band out of popular musical elements: kids like rap, kids like metal. What happens if we put 'em together? The answer is, a group that sells a bazillion records yet barely varies the tempo during a 75-minute live set. The six-member band poured extraordinary energy into its tunes, but the musical formula was tired by the second song of the set: Singer Chester Bennington wailed in anguish until he ran out of breath, and then vocalist Mike Shinoda rapped tepid rhymes for a few bars.

Perhaps the group's best moment came on "Step Up," which rode an old-school hip-hop vibe fed by a grinding guitar riff. The tune called to mind the collaboration between Anthrax and Public Enemy in 1991, years before the rap-metal bands caught on. The crowd was an enthusiastic participant throughout, though the biggest reaction came on the hits, including the moody "In the End" and the metallic throb of "Crawling."

Revolution is in the mix

A review of the Holmdel, N.J show from New York Daily News.

Despite its name, the Projekt Revolution tour isn't all that revolutionary. Headlined by one gangsta-rap icon (Snoop Dogg) and two bands that feel equally comfortable with rhyming and headbanging (Linkin Park and Korn), the tour's central point is to bring hip hop and hard rock together. But that idea has been around for 20 years now, since the early days of Run-D.M.C. And these days it's getting pretty dull. Still, the relevance of a concept depends on what you do with it. And when Projekt Revolution hit the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J., Friday, there were plenty of interesting variations on display.

As for Linkin Park, the reason for their enormous appeal became clear the moment they hit the PNC stage. Even when the band's raging at full throttle, with tormented skater-dude Chester Bennington screaming his lungs out, you can tell they're softies at heart. Coupling disaffected lyrics with simple, anthemic melodies, songs like "Crawling" and "Breaking the Habit" were almost sweet, in a teenage melodramatic way. Adding to the latter number's sensitivity, MC Mike Shinoda stepped out on baby-grand piano. How many rap-rock bands pull that trick?

No problems at weekend concert
posted by Jas, 08/02/04
WFSB report: After a near riot at a Dave Matthews Band concert two weeks ago, police say everything went well at a weekend concert at the Meadows Music Theatre. Linkin Park, Korn, and Snoop Dogg were the headliners of the all day show on Saturday. The music is a lot heavier and one would think more apt to cause concert goers to get rowdy but police say it was a completely different story from two weeks ago. Sixty people were arrested before the Dave Matthews concert even started. Tailgating crowds threw bottles and garbage at officers in the Jai Alai parking lot outside the Meadows. However, this time police were prepared. Thirteen officers were on hand to control the crowds and no tailgating was allowed in any of the parking lots surrounding the venue. As the concert wrapped up, police reported only two arrests.

Projekt Revolution Tour: Fans' Review

Zack sent in his meet and greet report from the Mansfield, MA show.

We're waiting right at the entrance to this area for about another 10 minutes when all of a sudden we hear someone yell "I'm gonna beat you, Joe!" I look over and see two golf carts, Mike and Chester in one and Brad and Joe in the other, having a race to Phoenix at the other side of the parking lot, Rob was the starting point apparently. Joe and Brad won by a car length, and took a victory lap down the M&G line, high-fiving all the people who made the list. They then made their way to the M&G tent and Mark lead us forward to them.
