Review: Rap-rockers Linkin Park warms up its fans
My San Antonio, 02/26/04
The temperatures may have been dropping towards the freezing mark late Wednesday night but inside the Freeman Coliseum fans easily warmed up to Linkin Park's bubbling cauldron of rap-rock-metal fusion. Unleashing guitar fury and growling raps at industrial strength volume, Linkin Park smoked the sold-out house packed with hardcore fans.

Linkin Park forges Texas ties
Houston Chronicle, 02/25/04
When the band returns to Houston tonight as the headliner at a sold-out Toyota Center, it does so as the first rock-rap darling of Texas. True, Linkin Park is from Los Angeles. But the band nearly stole the show from Metallica as the opening act of last year's Summer Sanitarium tour. Now, after turning parts of performances here and in Dallas into the CD/DVD Live In Texas, the adoption papers are ready to be signed.
The hopes of a dying genre chill in Linkin Park
Houston Press, 02/25/04
In a rap-rock world that spews more than its share of suspect rhetoric -- it's been a while since Fred Durst actually delivered a beatdown -- Linkin Park is more candid than calculating. It's fitting, then, that the sextet is the genre's last thriving band, having put out one of the top-selling albums of 2003, while Korn, Limp Bizkit and P.O.D. continued their recessions into rock history. Bassist Darren "Phoenix" Farrell isn't sure why it's happened that way.

Link' plays in our park
Oklahoma Daily, 02/24/04
Not many bands can claim their best achievement has been finding success in mediocrity, but there are always a handful that circumvent the standards. Linkin Park is the complete embodiment of this mentality, which was on display in full force at the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday night.

This Week's Hits: Linkin Park vs. Evanescence
About.com, 02/20/04
Linkin Park and Evanescence are battling for top honors in a narrow niche: Supposedly Alternative Band That's Really Mainstream. Both bands have a slight edge to their sound. Linkin Park has a fondess for rap and crunching guitars, combining heavy layers of sound and melancholy lyrics. In short, all the accouterments of today's alt rockers.

Drummer Rob Bourdon was late for his interview, but the Linkin Park Underground trumps anything else on the agenda. He was backstage with his bandmates at the Cox Arena in San Diego, signing posters and visiting with the Linkin Park faithful at a meet-and-greet for the LPU, the band's official fan club. Countless artists have rolled out the cliche that they are "doing it for the fans," but the top-selling rap-rock group has demonstrably stayed true to its commitment, playing members-only tours for the LPU.

Business Wire, 02/19/04
Linkin Park will launch their third annual Projekt Revolution tour this summer. The highly anticipated tour will feature seminal artists Korn and Snoop Dogg. The summer tour will continue in the tradition of past Projekt Revolution tours, born on the idea of merging and showcasing a variety of music styles. Projekt Revolution began in 2002 with openers Cypress Hill, Adema and DJ Z-Trip. Last year's musical guests were Xzibit, Mudvayne and Blindside. Projekt Revolution begins July 23rd and goes through September 6th. Tour dates, cities, and additional artists to the line up will be announced shortly.

Linkin Park proves persistent
The Columbian, 02/13/04
Many bands would not want to do anything to take the focus away from a current CD. While live records generally don't approach the popularity of studio albums, it seemed plausible that "Live in Texas" could deflect some attention from "Meteora" and perhaps even interrupt the CD's momentum. But Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington said he had few worries about "Live in Texas" doing anything to hurt "Meteora." In fact, he said the group already plans to release another single from the CD later this year. "I really don't know if we can steal 'Meteora's' thunder," he said. "I think it's had a pretty big bang so far."
Linkin Park keeps it lean, mean and clean
Portland Tribune, 02/13/04
Linkin Park tours so much that it has a recording studio in its drug- and booze-free bus. The band may be loved by teens, tweens, and even some of their parents for their cuss-free lyrics, but they're not especially into the role model thing. The members of this nu-metal outfit live simple lives simply so that they can get more work done.

Linkin Park, the main attraction tonight at the Tacoma Dome, remains one of the biggest bands on the planet after exploding onto the airwaves with "Hybrid Theory" in 2000 - an album that's gone platinum eight times - and avoiding the sophomore jinx with "Meteora," the third best-selling disc of 2003 at just under 3.5 million units sold. Singer Chester Bennington shared his thoughts on the Southern California sextet's sustained success during a recent interview.

Linkin Park Fan Goes Buck in Montreal

Linkin Park frontman falls ill, group readies new Singles
MTV, 02/10/04
Linkin Park were forced to cancel their Friday show in Inglewood, California. Doctors advised singer Chester Bennington, diagnosed with bronchitis and acute laryngitis, not to perform, a group spokesperson said. The concert has been rescheduled for March 15, the tour's new final date. Bennington was feeling under the weather during the band's show in Long Beach on Thursday, and the next morning his condition had worsened, the spokesperson said. Bennington has been resting over the weekend and hopes to be able to perform Tuesday night in West Valley City, Utah. LP's new single, "Lying From You," went to rock radio last week as the band's previous single, "Numb," continues to dominate airwaves. Their label plans to work "Numb" to pop stations until its appeal wanes, and then push the synth-pop hybrid "Breaking the Habit," the spokesperson said. Videos haven't been shot for either track.

Right on the Money
NY Newsday, 02/07/04
If Grammy voters had truly started taking hip-hop more seriously, 50 Cent would be poised for a Norah-like sweep for his critically acclaimed bestselling debut, "Get Rich or Die Tryin.'" So would The Roots. If voters truly wanted to embrace R&B, Macy Gray would have a load of nominations. So would Mary J. Blige. If they wanted to help alternative rock, they would not offer a left-field best album nomination to the retro- blues of The White Stripes. They would go for the experimental, forward-looking rock of Radiohead. If voters wanted to truly embrace successful rockers, it would not hand out nods to Evanescence but Linkin Park.

Out and about
The Salt Lake Tribune, 02/06/04
Meteoric success: Linkin Park has established itself as one of the country's biggest rock acts through the tried-and-true method of incessant touring. On Tuesday, the rap-rockers make their second Utah stop on the "Meteora" tour as part of a package that delivers considerably more bang for the concertgoer than most. In addition to Linkin Park, P.O.D., Hoobastank and Story of the Year fill out a bill that should have something to please almost anybody. One quibble: past Linkin Park packages featured a hot DJ spinning tunes between bands, and we haven't heard of one this year. Still, a $33.50 ticket for four bands is pretty good in this day and age. The show is Tuesday at West Valley City's E Center at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at all Smith's Tix outlets.

Why 'Dear Diary' confessional rock songs are resonating with today's young listeners
Denver Post, 02/02/04
Rock has always been therapeutic. Be it the frenzied fandom of Elvis or the obsession with Metallica, music has been a central part of the teenage rite of release and rebellion. But only recently have rock artists completely made themselves available by opening up their lyrical diaries to detail-hungry fans. Emo's popularity has skyrocketed simultaneously with that of other hyper-personal trends in new media, including reality TV and LiveJournal.com. The result: Secrecy has given way to secret-sharing. "It's one of the reasons (our fans) like our music," said Chester Bennington, lead singer for the nu-metal emo act Linkin Park, which plays Colorado Springs' World Arena tonight. "We're talking about childhood memories and things that just happened to us along with things that might happen to us in the future. And even though we have those feelings (of insecurity), when they see us in person or on the DVD or on TV, we're also normal, nice people who treat others with respect." And it's mutually beneficial. Linkin Park's Bennington, already an all-out rock star at 27 years old, feels the anxiety. It's written - very plainly - all over his lyrics. But his release is performing. "I get to get up on stage every day and scream at people," Bennington said. And scream he does. "Linkin Park may upset some people," said Dave Landers, director of the Student Resource Center at St. Michaels College in Vermont, "but it really soothes some other people because they're like, 'I'm not alone in my pain or angst or fear.' Kids are looking for people to understand them. Young people communicate with us by their language and words but also by their behavior, and if we don't listen to them, they'll find another way for us to listen to them, and frankly, that's Columbine."
Linkin Park not yet a headliner
Minneapolis Star Tribune, 02/02/04
Linkin Park's climb to the top of the charts with hits such as "Crawling" and "Somewhere I Belong" has been rock's quickest ascent in years. Saturday's concert showed it might have been too abrupt. The Southern California sextet is not yet a convincing arena-rock headliner. Even at a short 90 minutes, its set was still only about half-great. For every one of the group's ecstatically received radio hits, there was another tune that dragged and/or showcased the melodramatic aspects of its misery-loving catharsis rock.

In the end, Linkin Park stands ahead of dullards
Chicago Tribune, 02/01/04
In retrospect, it's easy to explain how rap-metal upstarts Linkin Park achieved massive success even in the midst of a record-buying recession. For starters, the L.A. group smartly excised meathead misogyny from its otherwise standard issue mix, maximizing its appeal. But more important, Linkin Park made the breakthrough observation that the singing and mediocre rapping didn't have to be done by the same guy. It sounds simple, but in the future the divide and conquer approach might be studied like a classic Super Bowl play.
Linkin Park proves rap-rock's alive
The Capital Times, 02/01/04
Pop pundits declared rap-rock dead months ago, but Linkin Park's sold-out show at the Alliant Energy Center Friday night proved that the genre's combination of hip-hop and heavy guitars still has plenty of life left in it.
Angry nu-metal just a stroll for Linkin Park
Chicago Sun-Times, 02/01/04
Think of a Linkin Park concert not as just a rock show, but as a kind of group therapy. Thousands of fans -- mostly adolescents with a sprinkling of adults -- all come to commune with the Los Angeles-based group, to rage along to its raucous songs. Linkin Park delivered the angst for 80 blistering minutes on Thursday, headlining a sold-out show at the Allstate Arena that also included Story of the Year, Hoobastank and P.O.D.
