Three of the biggest bands in rock-music become allies
posted by Jas, 01/31/04
This is an interview with one of the members of Hoobastank before their concert with LP in Philadelphia on January 20, here's the short review of LP concert that night:
This was a perfect beginning of what was to follow. The remainder of the show included a high-energy performance from P.O.D., during which members of the audience were invited on stage to help them sing "Youth of the Nation." Another highlight was the performance of their hit "Southtown." Soon after, the amount of space in the Wachovia Center seemed to shrink to nothing as the anticipation for Linkin Park grew. The band did not let the crowd down in any way with their set lasting over an hour. They covered all the basic songs that one would expect from any good Linkin Park concert and added in a lengthy encore after relentless chanting. This included a performance of "My December" and a guest appearance from P.O.D. frontman, Sonny Sandoval. There was also a special appearance from a literally naked chef, clothed only in an apron, to deliver a birthday cake to Rob Bourdon of Linkin Park and show off his rear end.

Linkin Park soars way to top of rap-rock
The Capital Times, 01/30/03
Is that right? Was Linkin Park really playing at Kitt's Korner in Pine Bluff just four years ago? Hard to believe, given how the rap-rockers can pretty much sell out the Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center at will these days. Tickets for the band's show at 7 p.m. Friday, part of a co-headlining tour with P.O.D., were all snatched up weeks ago, although diehard fans might want to keep checking www.ticketmaster.com just to see if any last-minute seats are released.
Linkin park's Chester Bennington talks
Denver Post, 01/30/04
"People suffer depression even through success, and I don't think that money is the answer to everything," 27-year-old Bennington said recently. "But people get this idea in this country that money is the answer to every problem in your life. Fame is even better (they think) because then not only do you have money but people know you and want to be your friends and they'll give you stuff. But I would like my music to change with who I am as I get older. Not every song that we write is like, 'BAHHH!' all in your face. There are songs like 'Easier to Run' and 'Breaking the Habit,' songs that are different. 'Papercut' is a different song."
Linkin Park's Chester Bennington talks about stardom and anonymity
Star Tribune, 01/30/04
Talking by phone from his home in Southern California a week before the kickoff of the Meteora World Tour earlier this month, Bennington admitted that he and his bandmates are relative nobodies despite the group's widespread fame.
Rap-metal: R.I.P. or here to stay?
Star Tribune, 01/30/04
Before Linkin Park became a multiplatinum band and MTV favorite, music-industry watchers were trumpeting the death of rap-metal. The one critically respected band in the genre, Rage Against the Machine, broke up in 2001, and Korn, Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock were deteriorating into caricatures of their foul-mouthed selves. Now, with Linkin Park defying the odds, rap-metal bands might stick around. In some cases, that's not such a bad thing, but in others . . .

Cleveland concert review
Cleveland Free Times, 01/28/04
With dynamic live sets that depend more on the personal charisma of the band members than on special effects, Linkin Park is one of the few nü-metal bands capable of defusing a non-fan's resistance to the genre. The six-man band heated up a packed house of moshers with a well-paced show that showcased material from its two multi-platinum CDs in a 15-song, three-encore set.

'Lying From You' the next single?
posted by Jas, 01/27/04
94.7 The Zone revealed in this report that LP's next single is 'Lying From You' (thanks to fromtheinside03 at LPMB for the link):
Linkin Park has decided to donate the proceeds from six shows on their current Meteora world tour to six different charities. Although not all the dates or charities have been decided yet, guitarist Brad Delson explained that the band just wants to give something back. "Each of the guys will choose a charity, or charities, to give the money to. I actually work with UCLA, doing scholarships for inner city kids that wouldn't be able to pay to go to school. And I went to UCLA, so that's something that's close to my heart. It's just amazing to be in a position where we can work with the community and give back." The next single from Linkin Park's platinum-plus second album, Meteora, is called "Lying From You." The band's North American tour, which also features P.O.D., Hoobastank, and Story Of The Year, pulls into the Palace Of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan, tonight, and the Allstate Arena right here in Rosemont, Illinois, on Thursday.

Hard work, patience pay off for Linkin Park
The Flint Journal, 01/26/04
Phoenix admits that the sudden success of "Hybrid Theory," with its blustery blend of metal and rap, caught everyone in the band off guard. "It was ridiculous. It was crazy. From the first week Hybrid' came out, it continued to surprise us," he said, recalling that the band members were hoping to sell a few thousand copies the week it debuted. "It did 46,000 units, which just completely floored us," said the bassist, who had left to honor a commitment with a punk band called the Snacks shortly before the CD was recorded and rejoined in time for 2002's "Reanimation," on which he played cello and violin.

Linkin Park forges link with fans
Montreal Gazette, 01/25/04
For a bunch of tortured souls, Linkin Park looked like they were having the time of their lives Friday at the Bell Centre. Behind the tormented poetry and tantrum bellows, this is a band more concerned about connecting with a crowd than connecting with their inner children. Any navel-gazing at Friday's show was limited to the lyrics; Linkin Park looked 12,200 believers in the eye, and at several points broke down the performer/fan wall like few arena acts are willing or able to.

Negative review of Live in Texas
posted by Jas, 01/24/04
A negative review of Live In Texas from Malaysia's New Straits Times:
Linkin Park regurgitates the same formula with bone-crunching guitars with adolescent despair and a playful flavour of hip-hop on Live In Texas (Warner Bros). And it's everything you'd expect. It can be argued that Linkin Park can cut it just as well on the road as in the studio. But as can be seen and heard here (the album comes with a bonus VCD), the band limpidly drags its crippled frame across the stage heaving itself through a bone-dry set of meaningless anthems. The morbidly awful formula of the songs is repeated ad infinitum and creates a circular sense of deja vu, operating at three-minute intervals. Is it a coincidence that Somewhere I Belong and Crawling are nearly identical? Despite their lofty, stadium-playing status in the music world, the paradox of their existence is summarised in their best song, In The End: "I tried so hard / And got so far / But in the end / It doesn't even matter." How appropriate!

Linkin Park shows staying power with series of successes
Worcester Telegram, 01/23/04
Talk about bang for your headbanging buck. Concertgoers got it Wednesday night at the Cleveland State University Convocation Center, where headliner Linkin Park and three opening acts hammered out four hours of state-of-the-art heavy metal and high-decibel hard rock. Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington took turns handling lead vocals. Shinoda rapped; Bennington crooned, caterwauled and, during "One Step Closer," treated us to his impersonation of Satan passing a kidney stone: "BWWWAAAHHH!"
Music provides teens with an outlet of expression
Naples Daily News, 01/23/04
Linkin Park has become one of the most sought out alternative bands of today. Local radio stations play its hit singles every day and teens around America listen to its CDs incessantly. But, this every-popular band certainly isn't acceptable to many parents due to the hard rock sound and dry voices. If you take the time to listen to the words and read the lyrics, I'm sure you'll find positive messages, such as in this single "Nobody's Listening" from its newest CD, "Meteora," released in 2004.
"I'm riding on the back of this pressure
Guessing that it's better I can't keep myself together.
Because all this stress gave me something to write on
The pain gave me something I could set my sights on"
This small segment from one of their many hits tells listeners that even though you are going through a tough time, there is always something positive that comes from it. To let out the frustration, they write it down, which is a healthy way to relieve anger or stress. The lyrics go on to say that if you set your sights on something, you can achieve it. Aren't these messages points that parents try to get across to their teens every day?
Linkin Park provides amplified voice of reason
Philadelphia Inquirer, 01/23/04
Linkin Park's metallic alchemy rarely strayed from the script: MC Mike Shinoda and singer Chester Bennington traded rhyme and verse, and DJ Joseph Hahn and guitarist Brad Delson colored the verses with sharp effects, followed by huge power chords in scream-along choruses of anthems that rarely went longer than three minutes. Not terribly original, but to the assembled youth who heard the battle cries against conformity, neglect and isolation addressed in songs such as "In the End," Linkin Park was an ear-splitting voice of reason. And sometimes that's all people want in a rock-and-roll band.

Linkin Park, cohorts push rock diversity
Worcester Telegram, 01/22/04
Linkin Park was the picture of efficiency. The chemistry between singers Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington, added to the sonic trickery employed by DJ Joseph Hahn, all combined with the meat-and-potatoes whomp of guitarist Brad Delson, bass player Phoenix and drummer Rob Bourdon, yields rock's winning formula right now.

Fans of Linkin Park surf waves of angst-ridden lyrics
Akron Beacon Journal, 01/22/04
Wednesday night at the Cleveland State University Convocation Center, Los Angelenos Linkin Park showed why they are still selling millions of records and playing arenas worldwide while other bands are being forgotten. (Limp who?) The six-piece band has only two records that combined clock in at little more than 70 minutes, but their songs are punchy, tense and under four minutes. Nerdy singer Chester Bennington has mastered the art of the anthemic chorus. Bennington and emcee Mike Shinoda are also masters at encapsulating the fear, confusion, insecurity, mistrust and alienation that comes with puberty and impending adulthood.

Linkin Park songs banned from 'American Idol' auditions
Yahoo Launch, 01/21/04
The third season of American Idol kicked off this week on FOX with the final auditions show airing Wednesday (January 21) at 8 p.m. ET. The three opening shows take a behind-the-scenes look at the good, the bad, and the really, really bad from auditions in New York, Atlanta and Houston. The season premiere of American Idol on Monday (January 19) attracted an estimated 28 million viewers. According to information from the hit show obtained by LAUNCH, several singers and songs were banned from being performed at this year's auditions, including Sarah McLachlan's "Angel," Etta James' "At Last," Elton John's "Candle In The Wind," and the ever-popular "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys. You also won't hear anything by Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Mariah Carey, No Doubt, R. Kelly, Tom Petty, Korn, Linkin Park, Carly Simon, or John Mellencamp during the audition process. The American Idol memo also discourages "most alternative rock bands" to perform during the audition.

Linkin Park provide the polish at New York Show
MTV, 01/20/04
"What's this, like your 15th or 17th [Linkin Park show]?" Shinoda asked one fan before the band started "Papercut." And after the cathartic "From the Inside," Bennington, too, played to the adoring public: "I wanna give all you guys a big, sloppy kiss," he began. "I can kiss guys and not be gay. And even if I was, so what? I just love you guys." The fan devotion continued when Linkin Park invited a frizzy-haired audience member to play guitar during "Faint."
Emotional peaks galore from soaring Linkin Park
Boston Globe, 01/20/04
Linkin Park has totally arrived, based on its phenomenal show at the sold-out Worcester Centrum Centre on Saturday. It was a long way from last summer, when the band seemed out of place on Metallica's Sanitarium Tour at Gillette Stadium, and an even longer way from its uneven date at Lowell's Tsongas Arena in 2002.
This time, Linkin Park clicked in every way. Singer Chester Bennington and rapper Mike Shinoda blended like brothers, while the band's sound and production (especially its smart use of video) were exemplary. And with band members running up and down ramps at either side of the stage, there were no dull moments.

Linkin Park headlines dark-edged teen dream
Boston Herald, 01/19/04
Linkin Park is the headliner of this tour for a reason: It puts on a flawlessly executed and ridiculously exuberant live show. The combination of Chester Bennington's yearning nasal tenor with Mike Shinoda's rapid-fire rhymes is a heady pop concoction that translates even better on stage than on disc. Though the young rap rockers take themselves way too seriously, and their second album continues the same exact formula as their first, they have the showmanship and raw skills to pull it all together. Highlights included the angst-fueled melodrama of ``Somewhere I Belong,'' the adolescent anguish of "Nobody's Listening'' and the supremely melodic "In the End.'' Though entertaining, the boys from Linkin Park will have to come up with a different sound rather quickly. Teenagers are a fickle bunch.
Hot acts on Meteora tour start concert year off strong
The Washington Times, 01/19/04
Call it progressive, nu-metal, punk, hard-core but when it comes down to the basics no matter what sub-genres people create it´s still rock ´n´ roll.
On Friday night, the several thousand fans packing the Patriot Center at George Mason University got to experience rock music in all its many forms. Hailed as the first big rock tour of 2004, the Meteora: World Tour lived up to its billing, presenting a four-hour nonstop barrage of power chords, screaming vocalists and head-nodding beats. By the time Linkin Park arrived on its massive, out-of-this-world looking stage set, the audience was primed and ready for the headlining act and the opening screams seemed to last long after the band left the stage. Known for its onstage intensity, band members spent their entire 16-song set running back and forth across the stage, leaving almost no area untouched and no fan unattended. With years of almost constant touring under its belt, Linkin Park is one of the few bands that seem to play and sound better live than on CD. Barring only minor set and sounds problems, many of which could bedevil any live concert, it was hard to tell that it was opening night. Although billed as the first top rock tour of the year, by the end of its run it may actually go down as one of the year´s best.

Linkin Park shows staying power with series of successes
Cleveland Plain Dealer, 01/16/04
"In the End" was the big hit from Linkin Park's megaplatinum debut album, "Hybrid Theory." But the rap-rock sextet from Santa Monica, Calif., believes that it was only the beginning. And it appears to be. "Meteora," the group's sophomore album, was the top-selling rock al bum of 2004. The more than 3.5 million copies sold in the United States alone proved that the Grammy-winning "Hybrid Theory" was no fluke. Add to that platinum sales of the 2002 remix collection "Reanimation" and gold status for the new concert souvenir "Live in Texas," and Linkin Park has a pretty formidable three-year track record.
Rock Picks
Boston Globe, 01/16/04
Rock at the arena level has been sparse (hey, who wants to tour in zero-degree weather?), but the exception is tomorrow's ambitious bill at the Worcester Centrum Centre. Linkin Park tears Prague apart
MTV Germany, 01/16/04
LP article from MTV Germany, translated by Claudia:
The title 'From The Inside' is a full program. The idea for the clip comes allegedly really from the inner depths of Jo's bizarre brain – professional DJ and director. Joseph Hahn: "I developed a patent. I don't want to reveal too much about it. Basically, it registers my dreams on a videotape. I put the device on my head every time I go to sleep. Then I use these dreams as a source of inspiration to develop and write Video-concepts. I hope that I am able to make this new Software available to the public. Then they could use it too. It is really a revolutionary device. It interprets dreams." For the video of "From The Inside" the Czechoslovakian was the victim. There wasn't a single stone left standing, since the boys of Linkin Park let all their aggressions out during the shooting … Mike Shinoda: "It was quite frightening. People was hanging out of their windows, wondering 'What is going on here?'. We did indeed destroy the city. We had some cars, that you can see in the video. At the beginning of the shooting they were in perfect shape and throughout the day we completely burned them down. The roof was pushed in, all glasses were broken and we had smoke everywhere. One of our sets caught fire. That was cool"

For Linkin Park, sales outweigh hype
Newsday, 01/15/04
Last summer, Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington suffered sudden stomach and back pains that sent him to the hospital and put his band's tour on hold. Was it an anxiety .attack? A tropical virus? Mad cow disease? "They have no idea -- a total mystery," says Bennington, speaking by phone from his home in Redondo Beach, Calif. Now that he's fully recovered, he can even joke about it: "They're naming it Chester's Disease." Critics have bitten the band, too: Before its latest album, "Meteora" (Warner Bros.), was released last year, many predicted the death of rap-metal, the genre that Linkin Park helped pioneer. As it happened, "Meteora" sold 3.4 million copies, becoming the year's third-best-selling album. "There's stuff people rave about, that's on the cover of every magazine -- who's the coolest, who's dating who -- but they're not selling any records," says Bennington. "And I think that speaks volumes about the rock-and- roll scene." Meanwhile, Linkin Park is getting recognition from other parts of the music industry: In 2001, the band won a Grammy for best rock performance for "Crawling," a track from "Hybrid Theory." This year, the song "Session" was nominated for another, albeit more obscure Grammy: best rock .instrumental performance. "I have mixed feelings about it," .Bennington says. The band is certainly proud of the track, which was used to open its live shows last year. At the same time, Bennington admits he had hoped the song "Breaking the Habit" -- an uncharacteristically slow-paced, thoughtful number -- would be .nominated.
LP on the charts
Billboard, 01/15/04
Linkin Park's "Numb" tops Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks roundup for the 10th-week, but the cut surrenders the top spot on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. On that tally, Nickelback's "Figured You Out" moves up one slot to take over the lead. On the Hot 100 Singles chart "Numb" is at #16.

The kids have pop
Poughkeepsie Journal, 01/13/04
Pop-music lovers enjoy watching young talent grow, and 2004 was prime viewing as several acts followed up early albums with even more enjoyable listening. In rap-rock and hip-hop, Linkin Park and Ashanti checked in with well-received follow-ups to huge hit albums. After watching rap-metal rivals Papa Roach and System of a Down struggle to top earlier efforts, Linkin Park put out ''Meteora'' in the spring. Linkin Park, which features Phoenix native Chester Bennington, 27, on vocals, didn't stray too far from the angst that made its ''Hybrid Theory'' the best-selling disc of 2001. That theory worked, and the new album has sold 3 million.

With new-rock radio station Xfm now a smooth jazz/easy listening destination, the remaining rock outlets in Vancouver (both owned by Corus Entertainment) have clearly defined their directions -- and they're opposite ones. Each station signalled their intentions this past weekend, with 99.3 The Fox going mostly new and Rock 101 going mostly classic. What artists can you expect to hear? Well, here are some examples from press releases issued last Friday. The Fox: Audioslave, Linkin Park, The White Stripes, Nirvana Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, with "the bands that form the roots of new rock -- AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns N' Roses and Metallica." Rock 101: The Beatles, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, The Who and the Rolling Stones.

The News Scotsman reports that the movie, School of Rock, will premiere in UK tomorrow and organisers of the premiere's aftershow party have asked four Leith Academy pupils to play a gig for the show. Known as 7 Story Ruin, the band are planning a half-hour set to include covers from Thin Lizzy, AC/DC and The Darkness. Among those expected to attend Wednesday night's event are British indie music stalwarts Oasis and The Charlatans, and from US Meat Loaf and Linkin Park. Joe was the only member attended the movie premiere in US, no info who will attend this event. I'll post an update as soon as I hear anything.

LP music used in school program
Marion Daily, 01/09/04
It follows the story of two friends, one who fulfills the four virtues and one who doesn't, interspersed with inspiring stories from real people. Pretty standard stuff but for the fact that it's full of music from current groups like the Black Eyed Peas and Linkin Park.
"When you see them take music that the kids listen to and incorporate it with a message that we want them to see, it not only makes them see that music differently but also helps them focus on the program a little differently," said Brave.

HOOBASTANK / LINKIN PARK - Feb. 12, Pacific Coliseum
They don't rap so much as yelp, but whatever they do, the nu-metal angst-proud dudes that are Hoobastank, Linkin Park and P.O.D. (platinum sellers in Canada) know how to sway the teen and post-teen market. With newcomers Story of the Year in the opening slot, super-tight playing, massed harmonies and an overriding theme of early life crises will keep the Coliseum party in gear.

LP on the Charts
Billboard, 01/08/04
Linkin Park continues its stranglehold on Billboard's rock airplay charts. On the Modern Rock Tracks tally, "Numb" is No. 1 for the ninth week, while the song stretches its lead to a third-straight week atop the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Linkin Park's hand-drawn new video being kept Top Secret
VH1, 01/08/04
Band's management, publicist say they don't know what song it's for. Resident Linkin Park video director Joseph Hahn is known for taking a freethinking approach to his projects. In his breakthrough video for 2002's "In the End" the DJ digitally added a whale to a barren desert scene. His next piece of work, though, might top that.
"It's heavy on the animation," rapper Mike Shinoda revealed recently. "And when we say animation, we're not meaning CGI (computer-generated imagery). This is the real deal, hand-drawn animation. So it's gonna be pretty cool. I mean, that could mean anything from, like, Thomas the Choo Choo Train to 'Akira.' So you can imagine Linkin Park rolling around with some Care Bears. It'd be pretty hot." Care Bears or not, Linkin Park were fitted for costumes in late December and plan to finish the video this month. The band refused to reveal any more details about the clip, including what song it will be for. In fact, the fourth Meteora single is being kept so tightly under wraps that not even the band's management or publicist knew the title as of Wednesday.

Linkin Park lacks life onstage
Oregon Daily Emerald, 01/08/04
Not so positive review of 'Live in Texas' DVD from Oregon Daily Emerald:
The concert CD/DVD set shows the band's absence of originality and freshness during live performances. There is nothing particularly bad about the DVD or the matching live album that comes with it -- Linkin Park puts on a good show, after all -- yet there is nothing particularly good about the double disc set either. As a media-based culture, we've become so jaded by the barrage of televised concerts, music specials, high-definition flat screens and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound that this concert DVD just seems like another DVD of some random television special.

Big ticket: Linkin Park at Memorial Coliseum
Portland Tribune, 01/06/04
The 1970s have classic rock, the 1980s were pop, and if Linkin Park has its way, the early 2000s will be remembered as the era of "nu-metal." Linkin Park has soared to the head of the class among the pierced, tattooed, facial-haired followers of this breed of music that blends hard rock, hip-hop and rap. The SoCal-based band tours nonstop and was nominated for best rock album, best new artist and best hard rock performance at the 2002 Grammy Awards. The band hits the road in support of its most recent album, "Meteora."

Downloads mean fans ignore albums
The Age, 01/06/04
With the recent boom in 99-cent-per-song downloading sites, music fans are cherry-picking their favorite tunes and ignoring full-length albums -- much to the dismay of musicians who spend months crafting them. Metallica is among a handful of acts that refuse to sell their songs a la carte over the Web. John Mayer, Linkin Park and the Beastie Boys are also bucking the 99-cent song trend by only allowing their complete albums to be downloaded for $9.99. But they might be fighting a lost cause. Album sales have dropped 20 percent since 2000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and all eyes are fixed on new digital music shops such as Musicmatch, BuyMusic and Apple's iTunes, which has sold more than 25 million songs since it started in April.

Forget radio, Best of '03 found in Indie circles
Zwire, 01/02/04
At any rate, whether you downloaded any of these artists or never heard of them, the following CDs and bands were a must-hear in 2004, and you can expect more from them in '04 and beyond. 4 stars, Linkin Park - Meteora. Linkin Park's Meteora getting the nod for best mainstream rock album along with Radiohead's Hail To The Thief.
What's in a name? Whole careers
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 01/02/04
Metallica. Would a band by any other name rock as hard? Or Slayer. There's an act that will never be mistaken for a boy band. Whether their parents didn't love them enough or they got picked on at school, a glance down the hard-rock charts will turn up a bevy of angry young men too busy venting their spleens to remember to turn on the Spellcheck: Korn, Staind, Limp Bizkit, Puddle of Mudd, Trapt, Linkin Park, Mudvayne and so on. Metal has a long and proud history of spelling-challenged acts - Led Zeppelin, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, etc. - but the current crop of nu-metal bands are equally influenced by hip-hop artists who play fast and loose with letters.
