Smells like teen spirit

Leonard Cohen would have sung Hallelujah to rejoice with the Bangkok crowd at Linkin Park's concert this past Sunday over the fact that it didn't rain, as was expected, indeed dreaded. The new 43,000-square-metre outdoor venue located opposite Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani (spectacularly named "AkTive Square" to get with the generation of SMS-speak goons) was jampacked with all sorts of attendees ranging from devoted Linkin Park followers (scary), curious individuals (still scary) to parents in their late thirties (very scary) chaperoning their 12-year-olds.

Linkin Park's gig on Tuesday night was attended by many young children. Luckily, nothing happened. But what if one of them had been hurt? Indeed, while Linkin Park proved to be an awesome live band, generating enough energy on the Padang to light up a National Day Parade, I was more amazed at the number of young fans there.

High Voltage
posted by Jas, 06/24/04, from Today
It was not without irony. Anti-establishment rock group Linkin Park holding its first Singapore gig at the Padang, right across from City Hall. More irony: The band's "self-censorship" as it pummelled its Singapore audience of 10,000 with its angsty hits. The boys were clearly awed by Singapore — not just by the food and warm weather, but also the McCafes and, most of all, the fact that there's a Borders outlet downtown. "Felt at home while there," smiled Hahn. When talk moved to their upcoming album, there were glum faces all around. "The thing is, we already had an album ready," explained the bald and bearded Farrell. "We recorded it over the last few years and were hoping to release it after the Meteora tour winds down in September. "Unfortunately, the hard disk was erased accidentally. "So, to tell you the truth, I'm really gutted about that." Accidentally? What gives? "(Rapper) Mike Shinoda has this collection of industrial strength magnets and absent-mindedly left the hard disk on top of his magnet collection," said Farrell. Bummer. "It's a real shame," added an equally pensive-looking Hahn. "I don't think we'll set about recreating that album. It took us three years to make. Now that it's gone, I guess we'll just start from scratch." Right now, the only thing keeping the sextet happy is the upcoming Project Revolution concerts happening in July and August all across America. Linkin Park will headline, of course, but they will be joined by bands such as Korn and hip-hop heavyweight Snoop Dogg, in an attempt to further unite the hip-hop and metal divide. "Now this makes up for the hard disk fiasco," Farrell laughed, clearly excited about the tour. As excited as they were to play in Singapore, Farrell and Shinoda added quickly. "We've really been looking forward to coming here," said Shinoda. "Frankly I do hope we do well. It'd be real nice to be asked back again."

Dinner at Grandma's
posted by Jas, 06/24/04, from The Straits Times
Linkin Park steamed up their fans into one big sing-along at their concert at the Padang on Tuesday. No swearing required. American nu-metal sextet Linkin Park felt that they had to hold back a little at their concert on Tuesday, not that their fans minded. Vocalist Chester Bennington and rapper Mike Shinoda leapt off crates set up on stage as they performed, while DJ Joseph Hahn head-banged manically to the music as he scratched along to their vocals. But in an earlier interview backstage with Life!, Bennington revealed that he was going to curb his behaviour because of censorship sensitivities here. 'Usually, I cuss a lot on stage,' he said. 'And I spit to clear my throat. I'm not sure I'll be doing that here.' Onstage, Bennington would occasionally walk behind the drums to guzzle water and was seen discreetly hacking onto the floor when his back was turned to the crowd. And true enough, not one swear word escaped his lips. 'I don't think it takes away from the performance,' he said. 'Our songs don't have vulgarities in them anyway.' Grinning, he added: 'It's a little like being at grandma's for dinner. You can't cuss, so you can't say things like, pass the f****** boiled carrots, b****.' Not that the crowd, which numbered around 15,000, and included pre-teen kids as well as adults, cared.

An excerpt from an interview with H-Bomb Films' Wes Miller:

You've always had really tight music in your videos. Many bands that are big today and ones that get heavy rotation on MTV can be found in some of your films.
One of my good friends, BC, is the drummer for (hed)P.E. Through him, I've met a ton of people in the music industry. He's helped me a lot with picking music. We've had some really big groups that were relatively unknown show up in my films. I remember getting Linkin Park's promo CD before its first album came out and thinking, 'These guys are kinda cool,' and deciding to use a few of their songs. Next thing you know, they're huge and they're all over the place. The same thing happened with System of a Down. All year long I try to listen to new groups coming up that I think will be big, and try and use some of their stuff.

Power to the park
posted by Jas, 06/17/04, from The Nation
American metallers Linkin Park arrive in Bangkok this Sunday for an outdoor concert that's bound to have all rock fans dancing in the rain. If you were planning to buy a ticket to the "Linkin Park Live in Bangkok" concert at the gate, forget it. Within a week of going on sale, all 30,000 tickets have been snapped up, which says much for the rock sextet's popularity in the Kingdom. And a word of caution: if someone offers you a ticket, don't buy it – it may just be a counterfeit. This will be the first time in more than a decade that Bangkokians have been lucky enough to witness a real outdoor concert. Linkin Park will be the first major import to perform at this new 43,000-square-metre outdoor space opposite Impact Arena. But while there's a lot to be said for the great outdoors, the problems are numerous – it can be a nightmare for the sound engineer, security's more difficult to arrange and at this time of the year, it's bound to pour with rain. "Don't worry," says a confident Anongsiri. "We've built a two-metre-high outer cement wall and another 3.6-metre-high inner wall made of corrugated metal. Inside, there will be a huge stage. "The band's singer, Chester Bennington, says rain will have no effect on any of the equipment, including the speakers. That's why the band wants to play outdoors," she continues, adding for good measure that the expenses are a cool Bt40 million. "We have hired 300 security guards."

Scotland Review
What's left to be said about Linkin Park? They make Lostprophets' rise to fame seem snail paced, they have infested every music station from Smash Hits to Scuzz and they have a fan base age range from five to 50 years old. Every track seems like an aged gem and everyone sings along with as much enthusiasm as Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda themselves. All the singles are pristinely executed and an old, hip-hop styled track, 'Step Up', is plucked from the days the nu-metal superstars were called 'Hybrid Theory' for a bit of diversity. 'One Step Closer' draws the two day spectacular to a close in style.
Donington Review
After a day of torturous metal, considering the apathy from their fellow bands (let alone the fans), Linkin Park put a brave face on things. Their checklist of spray-painted posing stage crates and sugar coated lines about how 'this is the best crowd we ever did see' might wash with the twelve year olds, but the Slayer fans aren't swallowing. Donington is about the mighty R, and with his three minute water breaks and laughable mohawk, Chester 'Beddingfield' (as we like to call him) and his cartoon comrades are anything but metal. It's too choreographed for this audience who are not fooled into seeing much more than Busted with a few tattoos. Still, even VF dances along to 'Crawling' hoping no one sees, but from our vantage point on the side of the stage, Linkin Park are probably the least inspiring major festival headline act we've seen since the Manic Street Preachers played Glasto '99.

Live in Texas DVD review
posted by Jas, 06/15/04, from The Nation, Thailand
In this live CD accompanied by a DVD, the performance put out by Linkin Park show they have as much attitude and raw style as bands who have been around much longer. Proving once again that the multi-platinum "Hybrid Theory" and their next project "Meteora" were no flukes, the band have a stage presence and aura that captivates audiences. Combining the worlds of hard rock, metal and hip hop, the band's style is a true alternative to the die-cast bands who get too much airplay for blending in. The vocals of Chester Bennington alone show that not only can he sing extremely well but stand up to the plate when some in-your-face screaming has to be done. Mike Shinoda can rap with some of the best in hip-hop today and adds a touch of drama to Linkin Park's edgy, hard-driving style. The 12-track CD and 17-song live DVD combination are a welcome addition to the airwaves today.

Jakarta gig went on without incident
posted by Jas, 06/13/04, from Suara Merdeka
A review of LP concert in Jakarta. Basically it says that the concert went on without any incident. Chester said even though they don't know the music scene in specific, they know about Indonesia and when they received the travel warning from the US government, they just closed one eye. The concert started at 4 pm and the reason for this Chester said is because the band is more concerned about the safety of their female fans so it's better to do it in the afternoon. He also said that it has been their dream to play in Jakarta.

The Revolution Grows
posted by Jas, 06/13/04, from Pollstar
Projekt Revolution is gathering steam. In addition to previously announced performers Linkin Park, Korn, Snoop Dogg, The Used, and Less Than Jake, the tour now boasts the Revolution Stage, featuring Ghostface, Funeral For A Friend, M.O.P., and downset. DJ Z-Trip will keep the crowd hyped on the main stage throughout each day, and Ivan Mariquez, the "urban action figure," will entertain with an acrobatic breakdancing set. Another new addition is the "Revolution Village," a series of interactive exhibits put together by the tour's sponsors. Tour founders Linkin Park have promised to go back into the studio after this summer's trek, so it sounds like this will be fans' last chance to see the band showcase its most recent album, Meteora. "This is the last tour for the Meteora touring cycle," Linkin Park rapper/producer Mike Shinoda said. "After this record we're going to go write another record. It will be a while before we're touring again. "We really want to finish off our touring cycle in a big way."

Linkin Park's last show in Colorado Springs wasn't riveting, but it was loud and on-point. In a TV Guide Online interview with Whitney Cummings (the girl who punk'd Mike), this is what she said about Mike in Punk'd:

TV Guide Online: Which celebrity has reacted best to being punk'd?
Whitney Cummings: Probably Chris Klein, as far as the most satisfying reaction. He bought it hook, line and sinker.
TVGO: No, I mean who was the best sport?
Cummings: Oh. In that case, the guy from Linkin Park — Mike Shinoda.
TVGO: Is that because, as a rock god, he was too high to notice that he'd been punk'd?
Cummings: My question is, what happened to rockers? They used to be strung out with 40 babes in their trailer, drinking, smoking... These days, they do yoga and have a teacup poodle! I started yelling at [Shinoda] because he'd basically caused my house to catch on fire, and he responded like... like a superhero! He was like, "I'm just glad you're okay."
TVGO: Boring!
Cummings: I know! We tried everything. Unfortunately, he doesn't have that Tommy Lee [gene].

Sing along learning
posted by Jas, 06/09/04, from The Star
A common problem that a lot of teachers seem to face is how to engage their students in the texts used for learning English at school. Several talks offered a new remedy in the form of music and songs, claiming that it is very easy to get students more interested in learning this way. Presenters showed that songs can help to develop a broad range of skills such as speaking in a discussion or to fine tune specific skills like pronunciation and spelling. In his talk Getting Students Speaking Using Contemporary Popular Song, New Era College lecturer Too Wei Keong explained how he uses contemporary songs in his classroom as a means of helping tertiary level students develop all four areas of English competency, especially listening and speaking. By using four examples of contemporary songs - Somewhere I Belong by Linkin Park, Hold On by Good Charlotte, Beautiful by Christina Aguilera and Family Portrait by Pink, he demonstrated how modern music can help students develop confidence in areas of oracy. It's not just about funky tunes and Billboard chart-toppers though. Too explains that he uses the songs as a starting point from which to form discussion questions on the principal themes of the songs – identity and belonging, suicide, outward appearances and broken homes, for example, are key issues arising from his four chosen songs. "These songs work as popular texts because they discuss issues which young people can relate to," he said. "They can use the songs to reflect on aspects of life and the people around them."

No California award for LP
posted by Jas, 06/08/04, from The Daily Review
Based on the one-sided results of recent California Music Awards shows, one could be excused for coming to the conclusion that Green Day is the only band in the Golden State. The Berkeley pop-punk trio swept the competition in 2001, won the biggest prize of the night in 2002 for Artist of the Year, and cleaned house again in 2003 by taking home more trophies (four) than any other act. The popularity contest certainly came into play when Blink 182's self-titled album won over much heavier offerings by Linkin Park and Metallica for Outstanding Hard Rock Album.

Download Donington Festival fan's report
posted by Jas, 06/06/04
Jac reports: I just got back from download at Donnington and LP were amazing. The played for over an hour and their set iopened with Don't Stay and included With You, Points of Authority, Lying From You, Breaking The Habit, Numb, From The Inside, Papercut, In The End, Step Up and ended with A Place For My Head. The encore was Crawling, a cover (don't know which song) and One Step Closer. I was in the pit and it was total mayhem, bottles being thrown, people crowd surfing. Chester and Mike were saying what an amazing crowd it was. Mike asked for quiet when he was going to do his piano solo and the crowd said no, so Chester said it's a festival they can't be quiet. So Mike said it's gonna be one of those nights where I say one thing and you say another. So Chester laughed and said but they all take my side anyway. In In The End, Chester and Mike stopped singing and the crowd just carried the song on. And in A Place For My Head Chester came right into the crowd to sing the end of the song. I thought it was an excellent performance.

Download Festival Scotland report II
posted by Jas, 06/04/04, from Evening Times
Iggy Pop proved himself the undisputed godfather of rock at the second day of the Download Festival on Glasgow Green. Playing in the early evening slot, the wrinkled rocker - reunited with his garage-punk outfit the Stooges - put on a powerhouse performance. He overshadowed headline act Linkin Park and the other bands on the bill, including Machine Head and Welsh rockers Lostprophets. Linkin Park delighted fans with their Nu-Metal classics One Step Closer To The End and Fallen (???). Despite heavy rain early in the gig, the sky turned a gorgeous flaming red to mark the end of the first ever Download Festival.

Bammies predictions
posted by Jas, 06/04/04, from The Argus
The California Music Awards will be held at the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, the lawn and plaza area in front of Oakland City Hall; Broadway & 14th Street, Oakland, this Sunday June 6 at noon to 6 pm. Here's a prediction from The Argus Online:
Outstanding Hard Rock Album: Linkin Park, "Meteora"
This category appears to be a three-horse race among Metallica, Linkin Park and Blink 182. Let's scratch Blink, because they don't really belong in the category, and retire Metallica's number. Give the award to Linkin Park for beating the odds, and the sophomore jinx, with "Meteora."

It's usually good to speak your mind but blonde bombshell Mariann from punk band Surferosa will have to watch what she says when her band plays at this weekend's Download Festival. She has strong feelings about one of the headliners, American nu-metallers Linkin Park, and they're sure to upset their fans if she expresses them at the show. "They're boring commercial rubbish," rants the 24-year-old Norwegian. "I hate them."

Download Festival Scotland report
News Scotsman, 06/04/04
With a mere nine bands playing over two days, Download Scotland barely constitutes a festival, but it has been marketed as an al-fresco rock fan's Mecca regardless. This didn't stop pop-metal upstarts Lostprophets from trying to contest the title, but their US brethren, Linkin Park, sounded like anonymous rock minnows. Devoid of power, hunger, presence and volume, they were a poor climax to this quasi-festival.
