An interview with DJ Z-Trip
posted by Jas, 04/26/05
Pop Matters has an interview with DJ Z-Trip where he talked about his collaboration with Chester on 'Walking Dead'
PM: It seems like a lot of people -- at least coming up nowadays don't appreciate that because they've grown up with a very myopic view of what hip-hop music represents. They don't realize that, historically, hip-hop encompasses house music, funk music, disco ... Now, it looks like the most recognizable name, the one that most people reading this site might recognize, is Chester Bennington from Linkin Park [on the track "Walking Dead"]. Talk a minute about how that came about.
Z-Trip: He and I actually met each other on the road -- I'd opened for them three times on three separate tours. We've spent quite a bit of time together. I'm friends with the band, we're all homies. They've always looked out for me and I try my damnedest to look out for them. I think they're real genuine people, and I dig where they're coming from. It was just one of those things [where] I'd always wanted to do something with Chester, not even so much because he's Chester from Linkin Park -- that's obvious. I wasn't really that excited about that aspect, as much as I was about this [other] aspect, which is the bigger thing which I think is a shame because I don't think a lot of people are going to know -- but he's from Phoenix and I'm from Phoenix. There's a karmic element there for me with that song. You've got two guys who came from nothing and have made something for themselves, and that was the thing I was trying my hardest to make happen, and see happen. Just two guys making music. Z-Trip and Linkin Park aside, it was Zack and Chester. "Hey, what do you want to do? Let's make a song."
PM: Representin' the A.Z.
Z-Trip: Basically. If I could call the song "Representing Arizona", that's what I would call it, but it just wouldn't have the same ring to it. But really, that was it. It helps that he's a recognizable name, and he's obviously a big draw, but as much as he's a draw into my world I hope that I'm a draw into his world. There's a lot of people in my world that are very super-critical about music, that have written Linkin Park off as being a pop band, or whatever. Just like I got written off for being the DJ who mixed rock records. It's the concept that I think he and I both strive to smash, which is that you may think you have us pidgeonholed or figured out, but we've got a lot more to offer. It's a very dark track, it's getting a lot of play on the radio right now. -- Tim O'Neil. Full interview

Linkin Park MC Builds A Fort With Jay-Z, Common, John Legend
posted by Jas, 04/19/05
MTV.com has a report on Fort Minor where Mike talks about some of the tracks on "Rising Tied". 'Remember The Name' will be the first single off "Rising Tied". Album is due out late summer. Watch video clip or download clip here.
"There's a lot of dynamics in the record, and that's why the name Fort Minor works so well," Shinoda explained. " 'Fort' [is] something that's heavy and militant. 'Minor' [is] taken one of two ways: either meaning small or meaning ... between the two basic chords in music theory, you've got major or minor, and minor is described as the darker, sadder chord. The album is about the dynamic when you put all those things together. You've got that spectrum." Common, Black Thought of the Roots, Kenna, John Legend and L.A. underground hip-hop act Styles of Beyond are featured on the album, called Rising Tied and produced by Shinoda. The Linkin Park lyricist has been friends with Styles of Beyond for nearly eight years and said he feels blessed to provide the group with mainstream attention.
"Their producer helped me buy my first sampler," a smiling Shinoda recalled. "I've known these guys forever, and for me to be able to come back and put them on [Linkin Park's] label, Machine Shop Records, it's a good feeling. You can tell on the song 'Remember the Name' [that] we were having fun with it and being able to brag on it."
Other tracks include "Petrified," "Where'd You Go," "Believe in Me" and the concept song "Right Now," for which Shinoda was joined by another MC, Black Thought. "'Right Now' is a cross section of everyday life as each person sees it," Shinoda said. "And Black Thought's verse is one of the best I've ever heard him do. It's beautiful. And it made the song just perfect to me."
After making friendly with Jay-Z on Linkin Park's collaborative mash-up album, Shinoda was able to land Jay as Rising Tied's executive producer. Shinoda insisted on working with trusted people, he said, including Linkin Park bandmate Brad Delson, who, along with Jay, kept him in line creatively.
"Remember the Name" will be the first single the project releases. It's a song that sums up where we're coming from with the album and the project," Shinoda explained. "So if you were to look for the record out there on the Internet, look for that [song] first."
Does that mean Shinoda is supportive enough of Internet downloading to say where tracks might appear? "You're gonna have to be creative," he smiled. "I'm not going to tell people where to look." -- Hillary Crosley

Mike's solo album mention
posted by Jas, 04/15/05
Ballerstatus has another mention of Mike and his solo effort.
Def Jam's presiding prez Jay-Z also made news this week, in a way not a lot would expect. Those that read the headline yesterday know that stemming from the massive success that the Jay-Z/ Linkin Park Mash-up received, the band's rapper, Mike Shinoda is working on his solo effort and get this, Hov is the executive producer of the album. I was able to get an early preview of five tracks, and I must say Mike has skills on the mic. Dude is humble too, which is cool to see for a dude that moves millions upon millions of units...
The Earlier the Better for Chart Entries
posted by Jas, 04/15/05
Reuters has an article about when's the best time to drop an album and mention Linkin Park
It is possible that an album released in the fourth quarter of one year can triumph as the top-selling set of the following year, but that has happened only once in the last six years. Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory," which hit the market in October 2000, staged a come-from-behind rally in fourth-quarter 2001 to overtake another 2000 release, Shaggy's "Hotshot." Aside from Linkin Park's win, an album from the previous year earned the top slot from 1995 through 1998. Full article

Mike Shinoda calls Jay-Z to exective produce his solo album
posted by Jas, 04/14/05
Ballerstatus has more detailed reports on Mike's solo album which is actually called "The Rising Tied". It was reported yesterday that Fort Minor was the title of the album but actually it's the name of the group of people, including Mike, who work on "The Rising Tied".
Mike explained, "It's called Fort Minor, instead of my name because there are a bunch of other people involved in the project. But I only wanted to work with family and friends; people that I feel are really close to me and we see eye-to-eye. Besides that, Fort has a militant meaning and Minor in music is a smaller, darker, sadder note, so the name is a reflection of the music." Mike also talked about some of the tracks on the album. Jay-Z is not in the album but is executive producing it with Mike.
"The Rising Tied" is yet to be completed, but Mike said it will be released late summer through Machine Shop Recordings. Full report
Linkin Park's Bennington helps Z-Trip Shift Gears
posted by Jas, 04/14/05
Artisan News has a short article on Z-Trip where he talked about 'Walking Dead' single.
Z-Trip, Linkin Park's favorite DJ is set to release his first album for Hollywood Records titled Shifting Gears on April 19. The centerpiece of the collection is the appearance of Linkin Park's Chester Bennington who lends his voice to the first single from the album, "Walking Dead." The single has had a great response from radio, having been on the top ten of the Alternative radio station in Z-Trip's hometown of New York City. The DJ admits his album wasn't quite complete without "Walking Dead," which was one of the last recorded for Shifting Gears.
"I stopped and I went, 'Wow, man. That actually really sounds good! Not to say the others [on the album] didn't. They all did, but it was sort of that undeniable. It had that sound. I was like, 'You know what? That just came out of me and Chester and we just nailed it. I was [assured] for the mere fact of we're gonna be alright because the people who are into his sound and the people who are into my sound are not going to feel compromised by the collaboration."
Z-Trip is no stranger to Linkin Park, he goes back with Bennington to their days in Phoenix, Arizona, and has played their Projekt Revolution tour the last three years. He's not only been a favorite with those guys, his talents have earned him spots on the biggest summer festivals in the U.S. this year, Bonnaroo and Coachella. The DJ is currently organizing tour dates and will tour to promote Shifting Gears this summer.

Review of 'Walking Dead'
posted by Jas, 04/01/05
A review of 'Walking Dead' by Z-Trip featuring Chester Bennington from Billboard.com, didn't know Chester co-wrote the song. Click here to listen to the song.
Numerous modern rock outlets are championing this peek into Z-Trip's major-label debut ("Shifting Gears," due April 19), including KROQ Los Angeles, WXRK New York, KITS San Francisco and KNDD Seattle. Indeed, these stations are far removed from Z-Trip's core hip-hop base, but this haunting track does feature Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, after all. Here, Bennington's aching vocals are layered atop blistering hip-hop beats, Middle Eastern strings and caustic guitars. With upcoming performances at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Z-Trip could very well break in a major way.—MP

Chester mention
posted by Jas, 04/01/05
An article from LA Times about fashion designer Jade Howe that mentions Chester.
"Men forgot how to dress for about a decade and a half. The '90s were super-sized fashion—men pretending to be boys in oversized cargo pants, sweatshirts and baseball caps," says Jade Howe, 39, who grew up in Laguna Beach and now lives and works out of his loft in downtown Santa Ana. Howe, who started as a designer with Huntington Beach's Quiksilver, the surf and skate apparel company, started Howe Denim four years ago to create edgy but well-tailored clothes "that actually fit." His designs, which he calls "cowboy punk meets English country gentleman," have found fans in Jesse Metcalfe, the Rock and Chester of Linkin Park. "Men are finding that a comfortable lifestyle can coexist with a more sophisticated approach to personal style."
