RollingStone.com has a Q & A session with Mars Volta where he mentioned Linkin Park.

What's the last concert you'd want to have to sit through?
Anyone who has the guts to make music in front of people should be commended. But I could definitely never sit through a Linkin Park performance, even though I met those guys and they're nice. Now I feel bad.

We hope everyone enjoyed the show and that those of you who attended the LPU Meet and Greet had a great time.

LinkinPark.de website reports that 'Points Of Authority/99 Problems/One Step Closer' will be released as the next single of Collision Course while MTV Asia is currently playing the 'Dirt Off Your Shoulder/Lying From You' video on MTV. Are they gonna release two different singles for Europe and Asia? guess we'll have to wait and see.

Highly damaging crash
posted by Jas, 02/23/05
A review of Collision Course by the Malay Mail, calling the mash-up idea a "commercially suicidal, 'match-made-in-hell' project".

First of all, choosing Jay-Z as their mash-up partner was a big mistake. Not that he's a bad MC, he's just too good for the band's MC, Mike Shinoda. When you sit next to a legend like Jay-Z, it really shows where you stand and that's exactly what Linkin Park doesn't need in this album. This is clear throughout the six-song EP. Jay-Z's rhyme is everywhere while Shinoda is trying really hard to catch up.

Musically, the tracks here are dry and sound like pieces of different albums cut, given a new tempo and notes, and put back together in one track. If there's any collision here, it's Jay-Z rapping on LP songs and vice versa; nothing more. The music doesn't blend at all and is not original enough as it has not been given any new groove (after all, this project is only a mash-up). There is also no coherence, and worse still, the lyrics don't make sense and don't fit.

Jay-Z gets his share of the 'crash' as well, even though his involvement in the production was pretty small initially. Fellow rappers and fans have started to question his credibility, ridiculing the quality of the tracks and so on. And who can blame them? Jay is named as an executive producer, and the tracks are disastrously cheap. Fans say he should have spiced up the whole thing even if he wasn't asked to. Despite many disappointing elements, the album 'works' for Linkin Park fans who have not heard Jay-Z's Black Album and MTV Unplugged. Anyway, who among Jay-Z fans don't listen to Linkin Park? Jay-Z /Linkin Park Collision Course is definitely not as powerful or as original as any of Jay-Z or Linkin Park's previous albums and may appeal to just hard-core fans.

The parched music and the highly questionable tracks, especially in terms of originality, might make fans feel robbed. They should have done better, and with Jay-Z around, they could have. But they did not. In other words, mash-up is not suitable for artistes of their credibility. It makes them (Linkin Park especially) look 'lazy' and cheap. They should have chosen to do remixes instead. In a nutshell, the album is a giant collision and the only question that comes out of this, er, giant crash is: 'What's left of the wreckage?' -- Mohd Adlan Ramly. Full review

South Asia Benefit concert review
posted by Jas, 02/22/05
Review of the South Asia Benefit concert from MTV.com. Hopefully we'll get to see Chester's own mini-documentary of his visit to Thailand.

The Mighty Ducks may have fled Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, but swarms of music fans flocked to it Friday night for a big show benefiting a big cause — tsunami relief. The all-star lineup for the Music For Relief: Rebuilding South Asia show included No Doubt, Jurassic 5, Story of the Year, Camp Freddy and Jay-Z performing alongside organizers Linkin Park.

Ozzy Osbourne was scheduled to appear, but due to a reported family emergency, he was unable to make it. Blink-182 were also supposed to perform, but dropped out with no explanation and only a couple of hours' notice. Although Linkin Park offered a refund, they hoped everyone would check out the show and support the cause despite the cancellations. With few empty seats in the crowd, it seemed that Blink's absence didn't keep many away.

The stage didn't rotate after their set, but instead out came "Charmed" hottie Alyssa Milano to talk about where the money was going (to UNICEF and Habitat for Humanity International) and to introduce Chester Bennington's own video of his trip to Phuket, Thailand, after the tsunami hit. After Bennington's mini-documentary, the stage rotated once again to reveal the man himself and his band, Linkin Park, who went into a set of hits including "Somewhere I Belong" "Breaking the Habit" and "Crawling." They also played a rarity, "Frgt/10," which required Jurassic 5's Chali 2na to reemerge to exchange verses with Mike Shinoda.

Hip-hop was in the house, but where was the promised Jiggaman? About halfway through the set, the lights went out and the beat to "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" pumped through the arena. The fans went wild as Jay-Z appeared, smoothly delivering his lines, "If you're feelin' like a pimp n----, go and brush your shoulders off." This was the first time since July 18 that Jay took the stage with Linkin Park to do Collision Course, so it was a rare treat for those willing to shell out the $85-$125 ticket price. The boys stuck to the script laid out on their EP, except at the top of "Izzo/ In the End," where Jay changed the lyrics to say "F--- it; I'm guilty." Wonder which charge he was talking about. -- Shari Scorca. Full review

Jay-Z, Linkin Park, No Doubt Rock in Tsunami Benefit
posted by Jas, 02/21/05
A short review of the South Asia benefit concert from Elite TV

Anaheim was rocking Friday night at Music for Relief's benefit concert for tsunami victims. No Doubt performed together for the first time in months, and lead singer Gwen Stefani's voice was in fine shape. Jay-Z stirred some rap in with the rock, joining Linkin Park onstage with songs from the album they did together. Backstage, one of the guys from Linkin Park jokingly grabbed a photographer's camera – they played around with it, but gave it back undamaged.

Stefani's husband Gavin Rossdale was a last minute replacement for Ozzy Osbourne, who had to cancel due to an unspecified family emergency. And this was truly last minute - Rossdale said he got a phone call at 7 p.m. asking him to fill in for Osbourne. He performed with Camp Freddy, Dave Navarro and Donovan Leitch's cover band. "Alexander" star Jared Leto introduced Camp Freddy. Blink 182 also pulled out of the concert at the last minute, although we didn't get an explanation.

Contributions to Music for Relief go towards the rebuilding of the tsunami-devastated areas of South Asia. For information and to make donations, visit Music for Relief on the Web at www.musicforrelief.org.

?uestlove puts Shinoda on his dance card
posted by Jas, 02/13/05
MTV.com has posted an article about the Roots and their annual Grammy all-star jam session and mentions Mike. Am I reading this correctly? Mike is working on a solo album??

For the Roots' drummer/spokesperson, ?uestlove, rubbing shoulders isn't happening only on the stage this week. A bevy of artists out here for the ceremony have been hollering at him to produce their albums. "Hey man," ?uest said on Friday, "that's my bread and butter. I network, I shake hands, I kiss babies. I'm a musical politician." So far, he says, his dance card is filled with Common, Musiq and Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park, who's working on a solo album. With all his hobnobbing, the Grammys are the last thing on his mind. -- Shaheem Reid. Full article

MTV Asia Aid report
posted by Jas, 02/13/05
Lyn sent in a report on the MTV Asia Aid concert from the February 11 issue of Philippine Star

I could respect what Chester Bennington from Linkin Park are doing (despite my seething hatred of their poseur rock n' roll). The guys helped set up Music for Relief - which is in partnership with UNICEF, the Red Cross, and Habitat for Humanity - to raise funds and help in the recovery efforts in the tsunami stricken region. "The last thing on our minds right now is making another record!" Bennington snapped at the reporter in the pressroom who was asking about the propects of another collaboration with Jay-Z. "We are all members of the community and it is our task to help people (overcome) what they lost." You could almost hear the sound of heads nodding in that room.

Chester Bennington, who presented the MTV Inspiration Award to all the people affected by the tsunami, made an appearance at the press room to give updates about Music for Relief. "We are going to have a benefit concert on February," said the Linkin park singer, adding that his band, Ozzy Osbourne and No Doubt are slated to perform as well. "I went to Phuket yesterday to see how the relief efforts are coming along. We're joining Unicef and Habitat for Humanity in helping rebuild homes, dignity a sense of regularity for the tsunami victims. But what we're doing is just a small part of the big picture."

The came the inevitable iPod and royalty check questions, "Are you serious?" answered Bennington, sound peeved. "I don't like to be rude but I'd like to stick to questions about Music for Relief which is the current focus of the band. We are reaching out to artists, fans and record excutives. I believe, we should stop dwelling on the tragedy and start focusing on rebuilding. We should help people affected by the disaster in whatever way we can." Chester's point is, sometimes making music should take a backseat to being human. -- Igan D'Bayan

Local newspapers, the Straits Times, Life section has a report on the event and this quote from Chester, "I can't even imagine working on a new album as what we are focused on now is helping these people." And The New Paper reports tthat Chester refused to discuss anything other than Music For Relief. He told the press backstage: "We just want to give back to the people who have given us so much. We have amazing fans in Asia, and when this sort of thing happens, it's second nature to reach out and do all we can." When asked about the progress of the new album, he said, "The last thing on my mind is making a record. I don't feel like a member of Linkin Park anymore, I feel like a member of Music For Relief." The paper then asked him what's playing in his iPod, to which he replied uncomfortably, "'I don't mean to be rude, but I only want to talk about Music For Relief. This question is too extreme."

Rock's in a hard place
posted by Jas, 02/01/05
An article from NY Daily News on the state of Rock bands these days that mention Linkin Park.

What rock lacks these days is a newer band as humongous as Korn, Limp Bizkit, Metallica, Nickelback, Staind, Blink 182, Linkin Park, Coldplay or Creed - not to mention the super-power-hitters of grunge, like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Each of those groups sold between 3 million and 10 million copies of their prime CDs. At the moment, the top-selling guitar acts - Green Day and U2 - have been around for 15 and 25 years, respectively. Linkin Park is the only rock-rap group to continue to sell in multiplatinum numbers. And they may have needed the input of Jay-Z's extra rapping on their recent mash-up CD, "Collision Course," to sustain that.
