Gearing up for Live 8
Live 8 Philly show stage set up "We'll have a 15-by-20-foot, LED-lit video screen on the stage, plus two more screens to the immediate left and right of the stage, and then two others far right and left - spaced 200 feet out. Then we'll have four more big screens starting at Eakins Oval and going up the Parkway to the far side of Logan Circle - the last in the 1700 block of the Parkway. So people should be able to see all the way back to LOVE Park." At each screen location, there'll be a massive speaker tower, of course, supplied by Clair Brothers of Lititz, Pa., the best in the business. "We've got the formula for sound delay down to a science," said Stevenson. "Each tower is 625 milliseconds delayed beyond the one closer to the stage." Early arrivals take note: the sound and video show will actually light up at 8 a.m. Saturday, showing satellite-fed performances from the Hyde Park London Live 8 concert. Performances here are supposed to start at noon. Philadelphia's Live 8 stage will be so large it can simultaneously accommodate two band setups - positioned stage left and right on rotating turntable platforms. "So when one act goes on, we'll turn the other table around, and unload/reload for the next act behind a stage wall," Stevenson said. That should make for smooth, near instantaneous transitions between acts. Ten video cameras - handhelds, boom-mounted and one moving on a track in front of the stage - are being plotted to capture the show for on-site and distant viewing audiences by producer Greg Sills and director Bruce Gowers, a master at music concert events. Both were hired by Live 8 to help put on the show here. "We're also hoping to have a blimp-mounted camera and may also take a shot out of Billy Penn's hat" atop City Hall, said Stevenson.

Turning up volume on tees Business schools may someday look to alternative rockers Linkin Park as a textbook example of entrepreneurial spirit. When the band started making a name for itself five years ago by incorporating rap into its lyrics and replacing 12-piece drum sets with turntables, Donn Delson's life was also changing. His son, Brad Delson, played lead guitar in Linkin Park, and the band was concerned about the quality of its merchandise. "Brad came to me and said, 'Dad, we are not comfortable with what's out there and we want to make sure everything the fan purchases is first class,"' Delson recalled. "So my son really inspired me to get started in the business." What we try to do is enhance the revenue potential for the brand without compromising its integrity," said Delson during a recent tour of his new 15,000-square-foot facility. But the former marketing executive at 20th Century Fox quickly ditches the business talk and often focuses on his family's indelible mark on BandMerch. Delson has three sons, all making their way through their 20s. His oldest, Brad, is still playing guitar for Linkin Park. Greg Delson, 25, is a musician and project manager at BandMerch. And Jeff Delson, 21, is a recent graduate of the University of California at Berkeley who plans to work at BandMerch after touring South America for a month. "It's really cool that I get to work with my kids. They are so smart and bring such great ideas," said Delson, noting he inadvertently frequents the same club as his kids for business. "I ran into Brad once at the House of Blues, and we were both surprised to see each other." Full article

Mike and Joe at NIN concert Count Dave Navarro among the other members of Reznor's fan club. "He's like the only guy that I get crush-y around," the former Jane's Addiction guitarist said at Nine Inch Nails' Vegas show. "I've been on tour with him, and I've known him forever. He will always have that [rock star] vibe. I don't care if he's f***ing ripped -- like he is now -- or a scrawny little skinny guy, there's just something about him." Fellow NIN faithful, Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn, and Mike Einziger of Incubus were also in awe. "This is the best concert I've seen since the Go-Go's when I was six," said Einziger. Also on hand for Reznor's coronation were Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Robbie Robertson
Stocks n' Roll Given that medical science has proved that Linkin Park's music induces vomiting, (even from their own singer), it seems a little rich of the band to strike over Warner Music's recent financial overhauls. Rich is the important word however, because as the millionaire (c)rap-metallers fight against their label's share prices, one thing has become clear: forget rock n' roll, or even grot n' roll – it's all about stocks n' roll these days.
