Linkin Park Explain What Goes Into a Projekt Revolution Tour

Rolling Stone has an audio
interview with Mike and Chester, download part 1 and part 2 (right click and save). Check out a couple of backstage photos of Linkin Park.

Shinoda explains that Projekt Revolution, which brings hip-hop and rock acts together, prides itself on its non-competitive, inclusive vibe:
"I think that if anything it's just a friendly, fun kind of thing. I remember back when we played Ozzfest a long time ago, we were still establishing ourselves as a band. I'd say about two weeks in we really had gotten our rhythm together and we were really playing great shows and we were winning fans over. It was amazing to us, a person we'd see walk in and sit down and say 'fuck this band' and by the end of the set you could tell we kind of changed their mind."

Linkin Park, who founded the Projekt Revolution tour and headline it, have an intricate inter-band system for planning and executing the tour:
"Our band is divided up — we head off different committees. Chester and Rob are on the touring committee. I do print art, merchandise, so the look you see on the tour. And Dave Phoenix handles sponsorship and stuff like that," Shinoda explains. "It takes about a year to put one of these shows together," Bennington adds. "I sit down and put together a wish list of bands and we do all kinds of research on the bands: what their average show is, their draw, what kind of radio play they get, what kind of history they have, how much they get paid, so that we can accurately place them on the bill."

MTV picked up a report on Linkin Park's Music for Relief and Habitat for Humanity House project with a statement from Phoenix.

Linkin Park have already proven themselves to be good Samaritans — they've been donating $1 from every ticket on their Projekt Revolution tour toward planting trees. Now Chester Bennington and the gang are taking their goodwill efforts one step further by building a home for a low-income family in the Gulf Coast. The band has launched a contest named after its recent single "What I've Done" in which the winner and a guest will be able to join LP to construct the house at an undisclosed location in an area affected by Hurricane Katrina. To enter, fans must submit to Contest@MusicForRelief.org a video clip that is less than two minutes long and explains what the person has done to improve the world. Fans can also participate by recording their video at the Music for Relief booth at Projekt Revolution, but all entries must be in by September 29. "We will help build [the home] alongside the family that will move into the house," bassist Phoenix said in a statement. "We hope to remind people that there is still a lot of work to be done." ... PR Tour Review: Hartford, CT

Linkin Park, by contrast, did little more than spew rage and angst over the audience for the duration of its set. Singer Chester Bennington traded lead vocals with rapper Mike Shinoda on songs that scarcely strayed from a formula: Heavy guitar riff, rhymes from Shinoda and plaintive vocals from Bennington until the chorus, when inevitably he shrieked his lyrics, veins bulging in his neck as his faced scrunched up with the effort.

Aside from a clanking industrial rhythm part on the title track to this year's "Minutes to Midnight" and a dominant grinding guitar sound on "Don't Stay," the songs tended to blend together as Bennington railed against injustice and ignorance with the self-absorbed air of someone who objects to those things only insofar as they define the way unnamed persecutors relate to him. The musicians were energetic but their antics had an air of premeditation, as if the band strikes the same poses at the same point in every song every night. Full review

The remarkable thing about Saturday's Projekt Revolution Tour at the Tweeter Center - beyond the capacity of the bands and crowd to withstand airless swelter for nine hours - is how snugly all the acts fit. That was accomplished despite the fact that each band showed off a different brand of panicky emotionalism categorized as "Emo." Blame the fit on everyone putting aside wounded psyches to bliss out under Linkin Park's big rock banner.

As godfathers of Emo's metal-hop division, low-voiced rapper/instrumentalist Mike Shinoda and high-pitched screamers Chester Bennington and Co. made a place for the bruised soul beyond the genre's usual whining. Linkin Park made it majestic, precise and energetic; this in the face of reports to the contrary. Maybe Linkin Park stepped up its game for the occasion. But the ferocious torment of "Somewhere I Belong" and the angst-driven chug of "What I've Done" were blistering. That Linkin Park maintained controlled chaos during slower songs showed the ensemble's strength. And their few lulls only made the peaks grander. Full review

While the emo tide has all but washed up the rock-hop wave that Linkin Park started riding 10 years ago, the two genres actually complement each other well. Linkin Park MC Mike Shinoda's rhymes pierced the crowd's collective consciousness. Shinoda and co-vocalist Chester Bennington might sport pretty-boy profiles, but their laments are the favored battle cries of suburban white kids everywhere. Even after nine hours in the sun, fans had energy saved to sing along to "In Pieces," "Numb" and "Somewhere I Belong." Sure, most teenage girls in the crowd came wearing My Chemical Romance apparel. But when Linkin Park's mile-high LED blanket uncurled from the rafters to resounding roars, it was clear who most of the Projekt Revolutionaries on hand really came to see. Full review

------------
Even though there were three times in the set when you asked yourself, 'Why are they playing this song?' Linkin Park more than made up for it by performing a near-perfect, one-hour-and-40-minute set Friday night as part of the Projekt Revolution tour in front of 19,000-plus at the Tweeter Center for Performing Arts. The last time Linkin Park brought Projekt Revolution to the Tweeter Center was in 2004, and supporting acts Korn and Snoop Dogg carried the show with LP playing a lackluster set.

It was the other way around this year. Linkin Park was tighter, more aggressive, and Chester Bennington's vocals sure have come a long way, sounding nearly immaculate. The group is touring in support of its most recent album, "Minutes to Midnight." A quarter of the set list was made up of songs from the slowest of its three studio albums. Opening with "Given Up" and going into "No More Sorrow" right after, LP had the fans' complete attention from the first guitar note. In fact, the crowd was in a near frenzy before LP played "In Pieces." Not that there's anything wrong with the song, because there isn't, but the pace just didn't hold up to songs such as "Don't Stay" and "From the Inside."

Same went for "Shadow of the Day." The second half of the show started off a little slow, too. "Numb" and a keyboard rendition of "Pushing Me Away" kicked it off followed by an extended intro to "Breaking the Habit" before LP came back with one of the loudest songs of the night, "Crawling." Right after "Crawling," though, LP slowed it down again with "The Little Things Give You Away." Don't get me wrong, the song was poignant — as with any song about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina — however, it just deflated the energy out of the amphitheater.

Linkin Park closed its set with "What I've Done" and "Faint" before coming back for an encore. In its three-song encore, Linkin Park performed "One Step Closer," "In the End," and the ever-catchy "Bleed it Out." During "In the End," emcee Mike Shinoda was standing at the barricade leaning into the first three rows of the crowd encouraging fans to sing along. "Bleed it Out" was the tune that everyone walked away from the show humming, whistling or singing. The catchy tune was extended with a two-minute drum solo from Rob Bourdon. Full review

During Projekt Revolution's brief hiatus, Linkin Park's front man, Mike Shinoda was working on another side project under the moniker, Fort Minor. In collaboration with Styles of Beyond, he produced "The Rising Tied," which did well on MTV's countdowns in 2005 and 2006. It was no surprise to Linkin Park fans on Sunday that Styles of Beyond would appear on the tour and play samples from the album.

About two dozen songs were packed in Linkin Park's two-hour extravaganza including old school hits from "Hybrid Theory" to fresh sounds from "Minutes to Midnight." Hiding behind a flowing white curtain, which only displayed their shadows during a two-minute intro, Linkin Park transitioned into the hit, "Given Up." The crowd was moshing throughout the entire set but settled down during a few acoustic renditions until the concert ended before midnight. Fans quickly cleared the venue both exhausted and satisfied from a long day.

"Projekt Revolution was epic and mind blowing. I've never felt so tired and exhilarated in my life but I guess that's what great music does to you," said Christine Nguyen, a senior statistics and Spanish major at the University of Virginia. Full review

A review of PR show in Toronto, CA

Finally, the night ended with one for all the dudes: Linkin Park. Here's where the whole Projekt Revolution bill sort of started to make sense. Emo owes a lot more to LP than one would assume. When you think about it, it's that same moaning "nobody understands me" sentiment, only it's accompanied with a scratchy turntable and rapping over guitar chords. For some, this remains as odious a combination as it was five years ago. But judging by the amount of headbanging, jumping and screaming, time hasn't weakened Linkin Park's fanbase.

Mike Shinoda and Bennington, the undisputed stars of the show, made for an interesting contrast: the former a guitar-slinging rapper with a constant smile on his face, and the latter, the angriest red-faced dude in rock music. Honestly, I'm willing to bet Bennington has no voice in the morning. But the good thing is that he saves all that power for the stage, bellowing screams that sound just as powerful live as they do on album, especially on "Somewhere I Belong" (placed conveniently near the beginning of the set as a preview of the vocal strength to come).

LP didn't blow their wad by putting all their big singles in the first half, instead keeping "Breaking The Habit" and "In The End" in the back end while playing mostly older cuts from Hybrid Theory and Meteora. Still, new song "Hands Held High" was received with warm familiarity from the audience, who were easily coaxed by Bennington and Shinoda into a massive choral singalong. After a smooth segue into "Numb," it was obvious that LP were the hosts of the show for a reason. Full review

So, who exactly is Linkin Park? "We kind of want to be a band that's kind of ambiguous, that's our goal," Bennington said. "We want it to be difficult for people to try to (pigeonhole) us into something. I think that as our career develops and keeps growing, we'll hopefully be a band that's known for writing good music. I think we're a rock band, but rock music has typically been a kind of music that is known for taking different styles of music and mixing them together, blues and jazz." "I've been a fan of My Chemical Romance for a long time," Bennington said. "I've seen them live a few times and they always impressed me, and I couldn't wait to have a chance to take them on the road with us." Full interview

Linkin Park's 90-minute set showcased a vastly matured band, one now comfortable delivering ballads such as "Pushing Me Away," with Chester Bennington singing solely to piano accompaniment by MC Mike Shinoda, and more ambient, U2-like fare like "Shadow of the Day," one of seven songs the sextet performed from its latest album, "Minutes to Midnight." Bennington and Shinoda also began "Breaking the Habit" as a duo before the rest of the band joined in, while the first encore, "Little Things," was given a more stripped-down, acoustic treatment.

Linkin Park's stock in trade is still aggression, however, and its 21-song performance was loaded with angsty, molten moments like "One Step Closer," "Somewhere I Belong," "Papercut," "From the Inside," "Numb," "Crawling" and "In the End." Bennington turned into a growling Cookie Monster on "Given Up," while "Bleed it Out" featured an extended drum break by Rob Bourdon. Shinoda also took a lighthearted swipe at preceding act My Chemical Romance; as fans held lighters and cell phones aloft during "Shadow of the Day," he cracked that "this is OUR pyro." Full review

--------------
Not to be lost in the juggernaut of summer tours and festivals, the 2007 Projekt Revolution Tour, headlined by Linkin Park, rolled into town Wednesday at Clarkston's DTE Energy Music Theatre with quite a bit of publicity. The Michigan stop of the tour was chosen to be filmed for a live, online simulcast hosted by music mogul Matt Pinfield on the social networking Web site MySpace.com. With high-tech recording equipment visible throughout the daylong festival, the bands appeared to try to look and sound their best, not just for the Detroit-area crowd but for their worldwide audience.

After lengthy stage assembly, Linkin Park took the stage for their long set, kicked off with "One Step Closer" from "Hybrid Theory." The band's back catalog seemed to hold up well, though vocalist Chester Bennington's voice took a couple of songs to find its bearings. "Breaking the Habit" and "In the End" found the band at its tightest, as the crowed echoed the angst-ridden lyrics back in unison.

Linkin Park addressed the live filming, giving plenty of on-camera accolades to Detroit for helping the band plant its roots seven years ago while touring on "Hybrid Theory." Linkin Park is enjoying more longevity than most bands in their genre, and much of that can be attributed to the band's honesty. They certainly had the musical chops to turn "Hybrid Theory" and "Meteora" into smash hits, and by the way the packed pavilion and lawn of DTE responded, it looks like the band and its fans are in tune with each other. PR Tour Review: Clarkston, MI

A review of PR show in Clarkston, MI, I'm sorry I couldn't grab the
live webcast yesterday because of the time difference, it was 4 am my time. I will grab the clips when they are available on demand later at MySpace.

After My Chem's 60-minute spectacle, Linkin Park had plenty to live up to. They poured it on thick, opening with three rousing hits from their catalog ("One Step Closer," "Lying From You" and "Somewhere Where I Belong"), but gave the impression their forward progress has stalled. Where "The Black Parade" marked a seismic leap in songwriting for My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park's recent "Minutes to Midnight" album found the band was in a state of arrested development. It attempted to break the band out of its rap-rock roots but showed rap-rock is the best the band has to offer.

As did Wednesday's show. The highlight came during set closer "Bleed It Out," the new album's blistering clap-along and one of two songs that lets rapper Mike Shinoda do his thing. The band extended the song, slowing it down and later speeding it up while the crowd clapped along. Throughout Linkin Park's 95-minute set, vocal shredding singer Chester Bennington prowled the stage like a gremlin, but his pained one-dimensional outcries -- "shut up when I'm talking to you!" "the very worst part of you is me!" "put me out of my misery!" -- revealed as much depth as a seventh-grader's angst over doing chores.

The band sounded muscular throughout, but the new material -- such as the meandering, vaguely celestial "The Little Things Give You Away" -- stalled. Though they're the tour headliners, Linkin Park would do good to take a few cues from its opening act. Full review

The 2007 Projekt Revolution tour hit Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre Tuesday night with Linkin Park showing off its hybrid ways. A little rap. A little rock. A little carefully constructed pop. I was a part of the near sold-out crowd that seemed thrilled with LP's inspired ways. Give credit to rap dude Mike Shinoda and singer Chester Bennington's pleading confessionals. The best moments arrived from the most familiar material. Numb, In The End and Crawling exploited the band's mainstream redefining of metal and hip hop served up with a lot of pretentious howling. All of it was theatrical. Most of it could land on Broadway someday as a jukebox musical. Call it Barefoot in Linkin Park. Hey, they did it with Queen. Full review

A review of PR show in Virginia Beach, VA.

By Linkin Park's 9:30 or so set time, the 20,000 seat amphitheater seemed to be at capacity and ready for the band's weighty and incensed songs. Over the course of three albums, the California group has perfected the type of bilious, rhyming-couplet anthem - one with singer Chester Bennington's soaring sneer and Mike Shinoda's calm, mellifluous raps - that a lot of folks seem to love. Though the band's latest disc, 2007's Minutes to Midnight, is somewhat calmer and longer on the rock than on Shinoda's raps, Linkin Park began their set on a furious note with "One Step Closer," a song from the 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory. The gruff song is swollen with Bennington's bleary, red-eyed agitation, featuring the catchy-as-sin refrain "Shut up when I'm talking to you." Bennington, who donned a tight jacket zipped up to the throat, is a firecracker of a performer, and he shot around the colossal stage in a rage. His presence offset the oddly reserved demeanors of guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Farrell, who both seemed content at the stage front gently swaying on oversized milk crates.

It was interesting watching drummer Rob Bourdon and turntablist Joe Hahn during the set; they were separated from the front line and positioned far in the back on high platforms. But the roaring crowd didn't seem to care much about the configuration, and during the lyrically-ambiguous "Breaking the Habit," thousands of voices blended together, partially drowning out a smiling Bennington and Shinoda, who could easily be heard in the venue's tree-dotted parking lot. Linkin Park closed the tour's Nissan Pavilion stop Sunday with a set that was clear and controlled for all its material's alleged anger. Vocalist Chester Bennington was in fine satanic squall, bringing as much bluster to older, hate-you/hate-myself hits such as "Numb" and "Crawling" as he did to new, Iraq-focused tracks "No More Sorrow" and "Given Up." His rage, though, was better heard and not seen: Occasionally Bennington bolted around the stage and danced as if no one were watching, but it never felt rock-and-roll raw.

The group's in-house rapper, Mike Shinoda, meanwhile, was often relegated to sensitive piano tickler, which made for a one-two-snooze interlude of "Pushing Me Away" and "Breaking the Habit" as he sat hunched over a keyboard while Bennington gripped the mike intently, eyes squished shut. Another ballad, "Shadow of the Day," showcased the band's new direction if not originality -- its "With or Without You" melody was laced with Edge-style guitars without offering any edge. After a brief intermission, Linkin Park took the stage. In contrast to MCR's almost untamed performance, Linkin Park was a study in musical restraint. Picking from songs from their latest "Minutes to Midnight," 2003's "Meteora" and 2000's "Hybrid Theory," Linkin Park proved that they have evolved musically -- though only incrementally -- into one of hard rock's most approachable bands. Gone was much of the rapping that found its way onto their past efforts, though the same reliable songwriting formula was present during "Somewhere I Belong" as it was on the newer "What I've Done." Linkin Park's performance proved that they write solid songs and perform them well, though they don't ever push many boundaries. Full review

As 10 bands took part in the 5-year-old rock festival headlined and organized by Linkin Park, a huge dirt cloud hovered over the lawn as enthusiastic listeners moshed and surfed along to the music. Good music is supposed to move you; at the Revolution Tour, great music will apparently toss you a couple of feet in the air and carry you a few feet to the left.

Headliners Linkin Park did their best to live up to them, and although their live show is amazing, it was clearly hard to compete with the show-stopping Romance. Opening with "One Step Closer," the power and the passion were more than evident, but the stage appeared cluttered and cold next to the fiery heart of the band before them. Regardless, the crowd seemed to enjoy the set, which included "Somewhere I Belong" and "Lying From You." At night's end, fans were left trying to decide which band was best, and that can only be the sign of a great musical Revolution. Full review

----------------
Linkin Park, once considered a trendsetter with its own mating of hip-hop and rock, has now re-invented guitar rock on its new album, Minutes to Midnight. The band's rapper, Mike Shinoda, has been kicked to the background, and lead singer Chester Bennington's screams have been muzzled a bit. In their place is a quieter, gentler (and they're probably thinking more mature) Linkin Park, taking on a serious edge with piano ballads.

For the 12,000 people on hand, Linkin Park still rules with a wall of aggressive sound, an edgy, angry angst. But the throne is shaky. Likewise, Projekt Revolution isn't revolutionary anymore, if that's what it ever was. Taking Back Sunday (with replacement players filling in for two of the five guys, the drummer and lead guitarist) is simply the typical rock band of the day. Full review

The rise of emo has pulled this tour — and, it seems, this audience — in a different direction. Pulled Linkin Park, too: the band's recent album, "Minutes to Midnight" (Warner Brothers), plays down Mike Shinoda's rapping to emphasize Chester Bennington's melancholy confessions and Brad Delson's de-metalified guitar. On Wednesday night Mr. Shinoda spent much of the time holding a guitar or sitting behind a keyboard, and Joe Hahn, the D.J., was pleasantly unobtrusive.

Linkin Park has sold millions of albums by being charmless but proficient, and on Wednesday the members underscored both extremes. They look less like rock 'n' roll royalty and more like a bunch of technocrats; considering the meticulous way they make music, that might be an apt description. The huge refrains of "Numb," "In the End" and other old hits shook the bleachers as effectively as ever. Some of the more restrained new songs (including "Shadow of the Day," which owes U2 a debt, and maybe even a check) received a more restrained response, but so far this band's new business plan seems to be working. Placebo: Crashing the Arena
posted by Jas, 08/18/07
Placebo talked about Linkin Park in an interview

Placebo guitarist/vocalist Brian Molko feels comfortable on the bill. "It's really a great tour for us. It's going really well, but there's an added challenge to it as well because, basically, it's not our own tour. It's a challenge for us to try to steal a few of [Linkin Park's] fans, you know, which is pretty much our agenda, and I think it's starting to work."

Despite all the talk of winning over fans, Molko insists things are very friendly between his saucy trio and the tougher Linkin. "We ended up [on the tour] simply because Linkin Park were fans and invited us," said the American-born, London-raised singer. "There's a fantastic camaraderie on the tour," he says. "Linkin Park are not only very approachable, but they approach you, so there are no egos backstage."

PR Tour Review: Wantagh, NY
posted by Jas, 08/16/07
A review of PR show in Wantagh, NY. Update: Added another review

While MCR was clearly the youth draw, Linkin Park - the elder statesmen of nu-metal/rap - got an enthusiastic response from even the baby rockers in the house that were too young to remember the band's beginnings. These tour founders commanded serious respect as they rambled through a career-spanning set in which vocalist Chester Bennington and rapper Mike Shinoda traded lyrics while riding a wave of drum curls and guitar shreds. Their set did crawl in the middle, when the group road-tested a trio of new, poky, nonrap ballads. But ultimately they ended strong with "Breaking the Habit," a tune that made you remember the kind of power and glory LP is capable of. Full review

---------------------
Linkin Park, too, is moving on. Its new album, "Minutes to Midnight" (Warner Bros.) pushes Mike Shinoda's rapping to the background and softens Chester Bennington's screaming in an attempt to reach the arena-size appeal of U2. You can even hear shades of that band's "With or Without You" in Linkin Park's new "Shadow of the Day," which the band played Wednesday.

Linkin Park is easing into this role slowly. Many of its new songs, such as "Given Up" and "No More Sorrow," were played in a hard-driving fashion to match old favorites like "Lying From You." But eventually, the mood grew serious with new tracks like "In Pieces" and "The Little Things You Give Away." It may take a while for fans to grow accustomed to this new gravitas, however. Near the end of "Pushing Me Away," Bennington bowed his head in silence, hoping to generate cheers. After a slightly puzzled pause, they finally came. Full review

Madina Lake talked about their Projekt Revolution experience

Those of you who know us, know that we are just like you. There's no difference. So now you'll have to imagine yourselves experiencing this: We drive our asses out to Seattle, WA...i think all in all a 30 hour drive. We get to the empty amphitheater at 10 am to load in and soundcheck. We're opening the Projekt Revolution tour. Only 3 hours later, over 5000 people are standing in front of us ready to lose their minds. And so they did, and for that we are deeply grateful. Now imagine what happened next...Brad from Linkin Park rolls up in his golf cart and introduces himself to us. He proceeds to tell us if we need anything at all, just let him know.

The tour progressed in this nature and with this sense of unity and friendship. Over the next 4 days, we got to meet, interview and just chill with all the dudes in Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, HIM, Saosin, and the Bled...plus we've played to about 20,000 kick ass people too. So far, it's the best summer of our lives. Interviews will be airing on mtv2 next week if you wanna see it!

Minutes To Midnight review
posted by Jas, 08/12/07
A review of Minutes To Midnight from The Star

Linkin Park is as much a product of its environment as its environment is a product of the band. The difference is that the former refers to the current political climate, while the latter is caught up in the trappings of the rap/rock genre the band is so anxious to escape, if not reinvent. For all its bluster, much of Linkin Park's previous music managed to be simultaneously sanguine and yet resemble a sonic assault against the dying of the light. While Minutes to Midnight ups the emphasis on melody, it's also far more jaded than anything the band has ever released, often chillingly so.

On much of the record, especially on The Little Things Give You Away, Linkin Park points fingers without shying away from a long, hard look in the mirror. Channelling injustice and guilt into something topical might not dress up the apathy as prettily as John Mayer on Waiting for the World to Change, but the question is the same: we all know the problems, but where are the solutions coming from?

By choosing commentary instead of aggressive reaction, by changing itself before agitating for alterations in others, and by striking out into uncharted waters in uncertain times, for the first time in three albums Linkin Park is beginning to practise what it screeches.

PR Tour Review: West Palm Beach, FL
posted by Jas, 08/11/07
A review of PR show in West Palm Beach, FL from Sun-Sentinel

The bands playing the Projekt Revolution tour at Sound Advice Amphitheatre on Friday had one trait in common: They all cared. Linkin Park, also the headliner, capped the festival with the day's biggest exercise in pain management. In front of a swirling, multi-colored palette, the six-piece band offered empathy and, courtesy of vocalist Chester Bennington, screaming release through songs such as "Crawling."

The Linkin Park repertoire of alienation ("Somewhere I Belong"), compulsion ("Breaking the Habit") and wasted years ("In The End") got grandiose treatment. Joe Hahn's DJ scratches and rapper Mike Shinoda's duck-and-jab verses took some of the excess weight out of padded arrangements. But given the band's fondness for power chords and sad piano - think Nadia's Theme - there's only so much flexibility the hip-hop touches can add. Linkin Park wisely signed off with a straightforward thrash tune called "Bleed It Out," almost an antidote to an otherwise somber set list. Full review

Linkin Park goes platinum again
posted by Jas, 08/10/07
Chester reveals the secret behind Linkin Park's platinum success

One of the gentlemen on the conference call was grappling with the how. How is Linkin Park selling albums in a down market? How did the group flip 635,000 records during the first week of sales if everybody is downloading music for free off the Internet? It didn't take long for the catcalls to follow. "Yes, Chester, what's up with that?" said Matt Rubano of Taking Back Sunday. "Give us the secret, huh?" said Ray Toro of My Chemical Romance.

Left to explain the inexplicable was Chester Bennington, lead singer of a band that has another platinum album (2007's "Minutes to Midnight") flying off shelves. "The reality is I have no idea," Bennington said. "We just go in and we try to make the best record that we possibly can every time we go in and do something. And I firmly believe that we have the best fans in the world, like they will die for us to a certain degree." Full article

PR Tour Review: Raleigh, NC

A review of PR show in Raleigh, NC from News Observer

Linkin Park knows something about rocking a crowd. Known for raging live shows and songs that touch on frustration and fury with a mix of rock, hip-hop and metal, Linkin Park has retained a raw spirit despite market success. "They're a phenomenon," says Steve Kingston, XM Satellite Radio's senior program director of rock. "And they've not only never sold out, but they've maintained their cred, which is very important to fans."

One of the disc's most powerful songs, "Hands Held High," has never been played live -- until this summer's Projekt Revolution tour. Shinoda's lyrics deal with bombed mosques, bumbling world leaders, sky-high gas prices and general global angst. "It's a fine line between sounding preachy and speaking our minds about something we just can't be quiet about," Shinoda said. "Not many bands these days speak out about anything. We feel like we're in a position where we have to do it." Full review

What about Linkin Park? Have you met them before this tour?
I have, but only in the capacity of the beginning of Projekt Rev. I had dinner with the whole band one night, but I also spent a good amount of time around (MC/vocalist) Mike (Shinoda) and (singer) Chester (Bennington) at a couple of press conferences and stuff like that. They're great. They're the most chill, down-to-earth guys. I look up to them in the way they run their band and are so hands-on. Some bands are surprisingly less involved than you would think they are. Their band is their baby. Linkin Park is really involved in every single creative and logistic aspect of the band.

A review of PR show in Charlotte, NC from Charlotte Observer

It was dark by this point, but the amphitheater sweltered as even more people showed up to see headliners Linkin Park, who cranked into "No More Sorrow" as it hit the stage sounding louder and clearer than previous acts. Songs like "Somewhere I Belong," the punky "Given Up," and "Paper Cut," which featured Mike Shinoda's slam poet-style raps, showed the band's diversity. Singer/screamer Chester Bennington's vocal power and emotion were amazing as he easily went from soaring belt to throat-scratching screaming with little strain.

Slower, more serious songs were a bit heavy for the exhausted crowd, but the fans held on to every note. They were justly rewarded later in the set with heavy hits like "Numb" "What I've Done," and "Crawling." The audience erupted for the closer "One Step Closer" and stuck around for an encore of "Bleed It Out" -- which at that pointed could have been renamed "Sweat it Out." Full review

Why did you decide to do Linkin Park's "My December" live?
I had heard it on KROQ, which is a rock station in L.A. They kind of play it every once in awhile during the month of December. I looked and looked and looked for it, and I realized it wasn't released. They had it as, like, a B-side on a single. I thought it was such a haunting, beautiful melody. It was one that, whether it was by them or any other group, it just had a universal appeal. I thought, "This is kind of a really interesting song. I can make my own version of it."

Bleed It Out review

A review of Bleed It Out single

Linkin Park may well be this generation's greatest pioneers of alternative rock. The band is currently going through a change of musical style, something that can be seen from their latest album, 'Minutes to Midnight'. They're trying to move away from the now cliched rap-rock stereotype and are trying to make their own brand of alternative music. However you won't see this change of style in their latest single, 'Bleed it Out'. They're back to their nu-metal, rapcore roots in this track and they're on fantastic form for it.

This song is a crowd pleaser. You can tell this right from the start with the cheering crowd and the brilliantly hasty musical backing. Mike Shinoda delivers his verses with quick-fire conviction and Chester Bennington bellows the catchy chorus. This song is one of the better tracks from their latest album and will surely be another chart smash for Chester, Mike and the gang. 'Bleed it Out' is out on 20th August 2007 and the album 'Minutes to Midnight' is out now.
