Mike talks to Rock Sound magazine about LP's 'Given Up' music video. Speaking of Rock Sound, 'Your Mom' reports that the Q&A session with Mike and Chester is in the March issue of the magazine, where they clarify (kinda) that they don't hate each other and Chester also talks about the sentence his stalker got.

''That song is just so raw and punk rock that we wanted a video that was like that,'' the band's co-frontman told us. ''The DIY punk rock answer would be: 'why hire a director?' So the whole band just pitched in ideas. We got together with our friend Mark who films our LP TV episodes and explained our ideas to him and he told us his ideas and it was just like any organic thing you put together with your friends for a You Tube clip. We made it ourselves. I don't know what the budget's going to be but it will be the tenth of a fraction of what a normal video budget would be. It's going to be a fraction.''

Linkin Park pleased to play bigger places
posted by Jas, 02/26/08
Phoenix talks about playing big arenas.

Linkin Park has been playing some of the biggest venues of the band's career on its most recent stretches of touring, including two nights at London's O2 Arena and a sold-out show last week at New York's legendary Madison Square Garden. Bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell didn't hesitate when asked whether he ever misses playing smaller places like clubs. "The correct answer is probably yes, but in a lot of cases for me, it is nicer to be playing places like Madison Square Garden," he said. "It's definitely exciting to be able to come into a building and just look around and see like the history that's happened here, and to kind of be able to be, even if a tiny portion of it, to be able to be a part of that, I think for me is really special."

LP to build house in New Orleans
posted by Jas, 02/25/08
Mike has updated his blog saying that the guys will be checking out on the progress in the rebuilding of the areas affected by hurricane Katrina in New Orleans on Wednesday. They funded two homes there and after their shows in Lexington and Nashville they will hang out with the home owners and help build on-site. Update: A news update from LP.com

This week, Linkin Park will travel to New Orleans to help build homes for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina with Music for Relief and Habitat for Humanity! The band will head to an undisclosed location affected by Katrina where, alongside fellow artist Coheed and Cambria, they'll join volunteers from Music for Relief, and Habitat homeowner families to build homes in the damaged Gulf Coast area. "There is still so much work to be done on the Gulf Coast following the devastation of hurricane Katrina," said bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell "Linkin Park is proud to be a part of the rebuilding process."

Additional report from MFR says that LP will be bringing along a fan, Adrian Mulloy, who is the winner of the band's "What I've Done" sweepstakes, which required entrants to submit a video, less than two minutes in length, explaining what he/she has done to make the world a better place.

Linkin Park rocks Apple store at secret show
posted by Jas, 02/21/08
Linkin Park played a live concert for contest winners and industry personnel at the Apple Store in New York's Soho neighborhood. Some photos here. Update: Short clips of 'Given Up' and 'Shadow Of The Day' here, hi-res at Apple.com. More photos added, also added are a few stragglers from 2007 KROQ Almost Acoustic Chrismas.

Linkin Park rocked a crowd of contest winners and industry personnel just after midnight Thursday (Feb. 21) at the Apple Store in New York's Soho neighborhood, in what served as an intimate warm-up for a show tonight at the city's Madison Square Garden. The set was recorded and filmed for what is expected to be a March release on Apple's iTunes Music Store, sources say. Linkin Park took the stage to the concise "Wake" before tearing into "Given Up," from its latest album, "Minutes to Midnight." The group also played "Shadow of the Day," "My December" (with just frontman Chester Bennington's vocals and Mike Shinoda's keyboard), "In Pieces" and "Bleed It Out."

"This is the best show in an Apple store we've ever played," Bennington joked with the crowd. After the set, group members stuck around to sign autographs for the devotees. Apple has hosted concerts at its New York store on several occasions, including performances by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, Kaki King, the New Pornographers and Simian Mobile Disco. But Linkin Park is by far the most recognizable act to appear here to date. Sources say additional A-list acts will play the store in the days to come.

'Green' energy for Linkin Park's New York concert
posted by Jas, 02/20/08
Energy Analytics, a leading New York-based energy services company and carbon curtailment specialist, has been chosen Linkin Park to offset the band's entire electrical needs for its February 21, 2008 concert at Madison Square Garden.

To promote its new album, Minutes To Midnight, Linkin Park will utilize Renewable Power Certificates (RECs) from Energy Analytics Premier Performance Green-e Renewable Power Program (TM). The band will once again demonstrate its commitment to help combat global warming and to reduce its own carbon emissions on tour through the use and support of cutting edge environmental initiatives.

While members can't perform in the dark or skimp on the power needed to be heard in such a large venue as Madison Square Garden, they can actively offset their overall carbon impact on the environment. To achieve this, Linkin Park created a partnership with Energy Analytics and elected to utilize RECs from the company for the equivalent amount of all the electricity used the night of the concert. Energy Analytics then began the task of identifying, supplying and measuring the band's electrical consumption and carbon footprint for this event. The concert will utilize EPA recognized Green-e certified New York- generated wind power to completely offset the environmental impact of the band's electrical consumption.

Madison Square Garden is no stranger to utilizing green energy either. For the past decade the company has been aggressively doing its part to reduce energy consumption by taking an active role in energy conservation and carbon mitigation strategies, allowing top performers, such as Linkin Park, to build on a platform of positive environmental stewardship.Linkin Park leads by example and is proud to demonstrate that the concept of reducing our impact on the planet is well within our reach. Apple taps Linkin Park to perform at "secret" NYC event
posted by Jas, 02/20/08
More on the secret show in NYC that Mike mentioned on his blog

Most companies can barely get anyone to pay attention to press releases when they have them. Apple, of course, has spawned a whole industry devoted to speculating about when it might have something new to say. For the last few weeks, there has been brewing speculation about a big announcement soon. And Apple Insider has intercepted a message from Mike Shinoda, a member of the band Linkin Park, to its fans. In addition to a show at Madison Square Garden, he wrote, "look forward to a special show that we're doing in NYC in conjunction with Apple…shh…it's a secret…"

Apple is expected to have new laptops in the hopper that contain the latest generation of Intel chips. It has also promised a software development kit for the iPhone this month. If indeed it has Linkin Park on the program, that would imply a music announcement as well. At some point, Apple needs to work out deals to get rid of digital rights management limits on all the music it sells. But some labels, notably Universal Music Group, have wanted to give Amazon.com a head start in selling unrestricted MP3 files to build it into a competitor to the iTunes Store.

Preview of LP's concert in Baltimore, MD tonight.

Nu-metal may be on life support, but Linkin Park is still rockin' it. Credit is due, though, for taking the form to a higher level, or at least a broader one: The group's third album, "Minutes to Midnight," delivered after a four-year hiatus, features U2-ish ballads, vintage guitars, electronic flourishes and only two songs with rapping. Thankfully for faithful fans, there's still plenty of screaming. It's unclear whether this makeover will afford them the same level of success they've enjoyed in the past, but one thing is for certain: this show will be loud. Price: $40.50-$56. Plus, they've got good taste in opening acts. Whatever it was that made Linkin Park click with the public at the turn of the decade -- the accessible blend of rap and metal, the huge sing-along choruses, the easygoing demeanor of its front men -- the trick continues to work. The California band remains a massively successful operation, topping sales charts, dominating radio playlists and selling loads of concert tickets across the world as it chugs through the latest phase of its career, marked by last year's best-selling album "Minutes to Midnight." Following up last year's visit with the Projekt Revolution tour, the band returns for a standard headlining night that features openers Coheed & Cambria and Michigan band Chiodos. 7 tonight, Joe Louis Arena, 600 Civic Center Dr., Detroit. 313-983-6606. $35, $48.50. Linkin Park's latest album, "Minutes to Midnight" (Warner Brothers), pays lip service to experimentation and artistic growth by looking a little bit beyond shopworn rap-rock formulaics. But in the end that's what the band does best: croon ballads in a fetal state and lash out in angry — but melodic — metal tantrums. Also on the bill are the prog-emo group Coheed and Cambria, and Chiodos, a rising emo-ish band from Michigan. At 7 p.m., Madison Square Garden, (212) 465-6741, thegarden.com; $30.50 to $65.50.

Linkin Park tour opens in Omaha on Tuesday

A preview of LP's concert in Omaha next week.

What's the one thing Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington wants people to know about his band's new tour? "I think the most important thing to say about this tour is that none of the bands suck," Bennington, 31, said in a recent conference call with reporters. Well, that's up for debate, but one thing's for sure - the tour starts in Omaha, and that has Bennington and the crew excited. "The first show is in Omaha, and I can't remember the last time we played in Omaha," said vocalist Mike Shinoda. "It was like three years ago, maybe four years ago." Try never. The band's last area appearance was at the Council Bluffs Mid-America Center in summer 2003. Lots of Omaha fans were at the show, and there should be even more Tuesday when the band performs at the Qwest Center Omaha.

Bennington said the new tour will feature a few songs the group has never played at a concert. "I'm not going to tell you which ones," he said, "but there are going to be some tracks we've never played before live, as well as bringing some of the good oldies back." Unlike a lot of bands that play the same songs every night, Linkin Park plans to change the set list. "Having so many songs now, we're definitely no longer in the position that we used to be in with 'Hybrid Theory' where we had virtually 40 minutes of material, and we were asked to play headline sets, and we didn't even have enough songs to fill one out," Shinoda said. "Now we've got all these songs, and we can kind of pick and choose, and fans want to hear different things at different times.

"It's a pleasure to be able to get on stage and switch up the set every night. Not only that, but for the U.S. tour, and this kind of goes out to the people that have come and seen us play on Projekt Revolution, the production will be different. The set will look different."

Video Download: Mike talks about upcoming US shows

Artisan News has a video clip of Mike talking about the US tour starting next week, download here

I think for us the challenge has been, having been around for so long and played a lot of shows our challenge is to always keep it interesting for the fans and for us, to do something different and new. At this point what we've started introducing into the set is more variety. We switch up the show every night. We have sets that rotate and there's room for improvisation and there's room to kind of mess with the show as it is. So you literally get a new show every night."

Another first for Linkin Park will be their Digital Souvenier Pack, which will allow their fans the opportunity to purchase each show on CD and get a mastered mix straight from the sound board. Shinoda also talked about the band's upcoming Digital Souvenir Pack. "To kind of celebrate that, we've made available for the very first time a digital souvenir pack, where when you buy your ticket beforehand you can buy a download of the show you went to see. So, in other words you buy the ticket and the digital download pack, go to the show, you come home and then in your inbox you get the show that you went to mixed by our official mixer, great CD quality mix. We're really excited about it. It's the first time we've ever done anything like it."
