Rock tours target China, face government interference
posted by Jas, 07/31/08 | share
Rolling Stone has an article about rock concert in China and there's a a comment from Chester.

Some acts, like Linkin Park and NIN, were cleared with no problems. But an attempted Jay-Z concert in 2006 was nixed over concerns about vulgar lyrics. Linkin Park tickets started at $12; last year's Modern Sky festival, which featured the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, charged $15; the Beijing Pop Festival cost $25. Low prices, however, don't mean that bands won't reap rewards in China. NIN made about $200,000 for their set; asked about reports that Linkin Park earned $750,000, singer Chester Bennington says, "It cost us a lot of money to play there, and we're not going to play for free." Still, Bennington feels their trip was worth the occasional compromise. "We knew the rules," he says. "Be polite. Don't try to incite a riot. Don't be political. I'm not saying I don't believe the people of Tibet don't deserve to be free. But everywhere in the world, there's shit that needs to be better. Doesn't mean we shouldn't play rock shows there." Projekt Revolution rockin' into town
posted by Jas, 07/31/08 | share
A preview of PR concert in West Palm Beach, FL on Friday

''They've got really great festivals in Europe, and I grew up watching great festivals in the States,'' says Mike Shinoda, producer, rapper, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist for Linkin Park. ``With Projekt Revolution, I think our choice of bands differentiates our tour from some of the other ones. We've always had a lot of variety, and we always have fun out here.''

Although the marriage of hip-hop and rock beats is far from unique, the style has always come naturally for Linkin Park. ''I grew up on both; that's just what I've always listened to,'' says Shinoda. ``Hip-hop and rock have crossed paths forever. It's really nothing new, but I think what we do is our own specific brand of it. That's been our goal since Day 1, that there's always been a type of sound that we felt was missing, and we wanted to create that.''

And a preview of PR concert in Tampa, FL on Saturday

Top-selling nu-metal act Linkin Park curates and fronts a lighter, more diverse festival than the July 29 Mayhem Festival. And it would seem that green-eyed rock monster Chris Cornell, below, may give a mini Projekt Revolution within his own set. He'll play songs off his Timbaland-produced solo record, due this fall, as well as the grunge-metal of Soundgarden, the modern-rock melodies of Audioslave, and the melancholy of Temple of the Dog. Ashes Divide, led by A Perfect Circle's Billy Howerdel, has a cool cover of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain. Busta Rhymes is the only rapper, but don't count on him to return to his more eccentric Woo Hah! origins ... sigh.

Mike told the Pulse of Radio that the band hope to have a new Linkin Park record out next year.

Singer Mike Shinoda told The Pulse of Radio that the band members have been working on new material for a while and that he's even found time to record some demos while on tour. "Actually I've been doing a couple of studio dates out on the road, which is new for me," he said. "I did a date when we were touring in Germany, one date in Prague, a bunch of dates in New York, and I'm excited about that. It's been very cool for us. So long story short, we've been putting in a lot of work and hopefully we could have a new record out next year."

CMJ has a press conference reporton MLB's donation to Linkin Park's Music For Relief organization.

"When we started Music For Relief, one of the things that I really enjoyed about it is the idea of it being a kind of connector hub," said Shinoda. "We've got a lot of friends in music in our communities, and we're in a position to put people together, and we've been doing that since day one." My mindset is that, and of Music For Relief's as well, if you're not part of the solution then you're part of the problem," said Phoenix. "I just want to be doing something. As far as the music community, I feel that that is such a passionate and strong force potentially, and to give people an opportunity to just... If you have that energy and you have that desire to try and get involved and help people, then this is one outlet that hopefully you'll be able to connect with." Full report.

Phoenix: "I think today for me really opens it full circle in that we're trying to extend our efforts outside of the music community including sports, including Major League Baseball, including Champs really with the goal of overcoming natural disasters all over the world. In conjunction with that we've also been attempting to make a difference with the environment. The Environment has a direct effect on what happens with natural disasters so we've been become more and more involved in that as well."

Shinoda: "The change from just reactionary efforts for Music For Relief came a couple of years ago when we realized that just acting on the reactionary end wasn't going to be ideal for us, and then we started thinking, 'What is really causing these natural disasters? What's going on that's creating this mess that everybody has to clean up?' That's when we started to get involved in various green efforts, various climate crises issues."

PR Tour preview: Virginia Beach, VA
posted by Jas, 07/24/08 | share
Preview of PR concert in Virginia Beach, VA on July 26.

The summer music season is becoming more crowded than ever with festival tours crisscrossing the country and huge destination festivals staged coast to coast. Because of that, Linkin Park vocalist Mike Shinoda says, it's important for festival tours to have a distinct identity. So when his band put together the Projekt Revolution tour, which stops Saturday in Virginia Beach, it chose the name to help further that goal.

"This is obviously not an Ozzfest. It's not a Warped Tour. Our idea is to showcase groups that were doing something revolutionary, something original, something different, either now or they're known for that over time." This summer marks the fifth time Linkin Park has taken Projekt Revolution on the road, and Shinoda believes the tour stands out from other touring festivals. "I see Warped Tour as being more kind of a screamo-emo-punk thing, and I see Ozzfest (which this year is being staged as a one-day event Aug. 9 in Dallas) as being a more metal tour. And those words I wouldn't use to describe this tour." Full article.

Chris holding a bunch of balloons is too cute :-) more clips from the show here. Fay Observer has an interview with Busta Rhymes about the PR tour. Update: A review of the Hartford show from The Republican.

Q: Looking at the Projekt Revolution lineup, this is quite a mix. What are your thoughts on sharing the stage with Linkin Park and Chris Cornell?
A: I'm fans of all those guys. I've been a fan of Chris Cornell since he was in Soundgarden. And you know? Me and Linkin Park used to record in the same studio before they put out their first record.

Q: Really? That's cool. You've been able to see them grow.
A: Oh, yeah. It's been great to see them develop since our days recording next to each other in New York. I've got a tremendous amount of respect for those guys. They've been very supportive of what I've been doing, and of hip-hop overall.

Q: You and Linkin Park recently collaborated on "We Made It," the first single and video from "Blessed." And now you guys are touring together. What was it like to work with those guys after all this time?
A: It's like the stars were aligned. That's a blessing, because at the end of the day, not everything works out. Sure, you may do collaborations with other artists, but very rarely do you get to actually perform the tracks live with them that you collaborated on. I'll be able to perform every night with those brothers. Full interview

Linkin Park, Cornell top Sunday festival

Another review of PR concert in Hartford, CT, set list here.

Linkin Park was more appealing the less conventional it was during its headlining set. When Bennington was wailing the likes of "Breaking the Habit," it made for some dreary meanders, whereas his frequent interplay with the straight-on raps of guitarist Mike Shinoda gave tunes such as "Somewhere I Belong" some juice. For all the group's espousal of genre bridging, most of its forays are from the same formula, and primal-angst tunes along the lines of "Given Up" and "Numb" became wearying.

Although Cornell has a growing body of solo material to choose from — including the soulful new Timbaland-produced tune "Long Gone" from his forthcoming album Scream — he peppered his set with past favorites including Soundgarden's "Spoonman," a solo-acoustic version of Audioslave's "Like a Stone" and Temple of the Dog's "Hunger Strike." Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington joined him on the latter tune, and Cornell returned the favor during Linkin Park's set on "Crawling" — and was serenaded afterward when Bennington led the crowd through "Happy Birthday" to mark Cornell's 44th. Linkin Park. Entirely fun and entirely excellent. I couldn't believe that a band as "mainstream" as Linkin Park could make a show feel so unique. They came. They saw. They conquered. The dead-all-day crowd was finally awoken with the Linkin Spark (haha, get it?) as the band tore through a set that was extremely inclusive of all 3 of their records. Full review

More press junket interview with Mike and Chris Cornell about Projekt Revolution. Update: Setlist and info for shows in Burgettstown, PA and Camden, NJ and Hartford, CT from LPLG.

"Street Drum Corps is improvisational rhythm," Shinoda says. "When (Linkin Park vocalist) Chester (Bennington) and I saw them, they had to be on the tour. When we described them to the rest of the band, we told them they are a punk rock Blue Man Group. It's almost like Stomp. But it's way more street and less Broadway. These guys are little punks. I love their attitude."

"Chester and I talk about touring with Pennywise and Rise Against," Shinoda says. "I don't know how many times it's come up, but it's something we always want to do but the time doesn't work out. At some point, we know we're going to get it done. It's a matter of when. There's always the next time. Each time we do this, we just want to make it as great as possible and as much fun for the fans." Full article

and KBS Radio has a short review of the Mansfield show.

Linkin Park's latest Projekt Revolution tour kicked off on Wednesday night (July 16th) in Boston with a number of highlights, including Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington and former Soundgarden and Audioslave singer Chris Cornell teaming up for a performance of Temple of the Dog's "Hunger Strike" during Cornell's set. The vocalist returned the favor later by appearing onstage during Linkin Park's show for a run through the band's 2001 hit "Crawling."

Bennington said during a recent meeting with reporters that Linkin Park enjoys getting as many of the tour's acts as possible to collaborate onstage: "All the bands are always -- like, we, last year, we invited everybody up to do 'One Step Closer'with us, but I don't think anybody came out. I think they were having too much fun hanging out doing something backstage (laughs). But, you know, we always, on these Projekt Rev things we always try to get everybody involved."

Linkin Park, Cornell lead Revolution

Another review of PR concert in Mansfield, MA from Boston Globe

Enter Chris Cornell in the penultimate main stage spot, with a surprising set culled heavily from his Soundgarden years before he joined alt-rock supergroup Audioslave. Aided by five young guns-for-hire, Cornell cooed through the psychedelic haze of "Black Hole Sun," belted out "Spoonman," and even revived Temple of the Dog's "Hunger Strike," on which he was joined by Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, who sang Eddie Vedder's parts. Only then did Cornell broach his Timbaland-produced solo record, "Scream," due this fall.

Even the adored Linkin Park played it safe, though, playing pounding rap-metal numbers - "Lying From You," "Somewhere I Belong," "No More Sorrow" - up front before delving into poppier, softer fare like "Given Up," where Bennington sang sweetly over covocalist Mike Shinoda's melancholic rap. Rhymes joined them for their collaboration "We Made It," and Cornell bopped on "Crawling." The beat feast finale, "Bleed It Out," featured Los Angeles punk percussion troupe Street Drum Corps, which also introduced Linkin Park's set and opened the main stage, too. Full review

PR Tour preview - Camden, NJ
posted by Jas, 07/17/08 | share
The Star Ledger has a preview of Projekt Revolution concert in Camden, NJ on Saturday.

Linkin Park has organized and headlined Projekt Revolution tours in five of the last seven years. The original idea, Shinoda says, was "to showcase groups that were doing something revolutionary, something original, something different." On a more basic level, the mix reflects "the kind of music that our band listens to," Shinoda says. "That's why we reach out to these bands in the first place." "That's really the spirit of the tour. Even if you're the first band on the bill, we hope that some day fans can look back and say, 'Oh, I remember the first time I saw so and so. This is a band that I knew was going to be doing something great and different in the future.'" Full article.

Setlist at LPLG. Update: A clip of Chris Cornell singing 'Crawling' with LP here and Busta with LP performing 'We Made It' here

It's hard to admit this, but watching Linkin Park tear up their set last night led to one conclusion: The California-born rap-rockers have evolved into everything a stadium band should be: anomalously audible, sincere and, most importantly, metaphysically connected to their maniacal fans. Linkin Park kicks off new Projekt Revolution
posted by Jas, 07/16/08 | share
More snippets from the Projekt Revolution press junket from various sources.

Chester Bennington said in a recent gathering with reporters that fans coming to see them for the first time won't be disappointed: "As far as we're concerned, you know, like, we're gonna go out and put on our best show we can. I know that we had, we worked on a lot of production on our last arena tour, so we're gonna kind of try to recreate that as much as we can on the stages that are there. So it's gonna be a really good show, as far as visually, from us, and we'll be playing all the songs that everybody wants to hear." -- KBS Radio

Chris Cornell says Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park nearly gave him a panic attack when he told him he must have an '80s kids theme for his stage during the Projekt Revolution tour. That was just a joke, and Cornell took it a bit further by suggesting they make all the road crew talk in high-pitched voices. Linkin Park, Cornell, The Bravery, Busta Rhymes, Atreyu and 10 Years are among the acts on the tour, which begins Thursday outside Pittsburgh. Shinoda says the tour isn't just for Linkin Park fans, and he loves how fans of other bands can come to it, check out the other acts and find out about new music. -- AP

So when it came through for me it was like, 'Damn, I got the record. Not only do I have the record, I'm the first guy to get an official Linkin Park collaboration. I'm going to be able to perform my song with Linkin Park. This is like, I really wanted that specific thing to happen, and it happens so I'm in one of my most amazing spaces." Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington said that Rhymes brings balance to Projekt Revolution.

"You know with the addition of Busta it feels like now we've truly accomplished what Projekt Revolution was started out to be. We want to bring all these different music genres together, and we love hip-hop. That was the one element that was missing from this year's Projekt Rev. I think that Busta will not only fill that spot with grace and do a really good job performing live, I think that everyone will be engaged because he's such an engaging personality and his music is so unique and so good."

Artisan News has an interview with Mike about the Projekt Revolution collaboration with Busta Rhymes, download here.

"One of the really great possibilities when we do a tour like Projekt Revolution, there's a lot of great bands and we try to do stuff in one way or another with other artists if possible and we'll see what happens as far as collaborating on stage. I don't want to spoil any surprises but we're crossing our fingers in hoping we can do some fun stuff with some of the other folks. Busta Rhymes, we obviously have that song with him and it'd be fantastic to do 'We Made It' onstage with Busta."

Mike also talked about keeping his creative juices flowing on tour while he continues to draw, paint and sketch as well as write new material from the inspiration he gathers on tour this summer. "We're on tour right now. We are leaving, I'm actually leaving in the morning, in a few hours to go out to Canada and start Projekt Revolution this Summer. I'm really excited about the tour. We got Chris Cornell and The Bravery and a lot of really big bands and we tour through the end of August. While I'm out there, doing some drawing, doing some sketching and writing a little music it doesn't stop. I love to do both and it's what I want to do in my spare time."

PR 2008 Tour: Interview with The Bravery, Busta Rhymes and Chris Cornell
posted by Jas, 07/16/08 | share
The Aquarian has an interview with Sam Endicott from the Bravery about the Projekt Revolution tour which kicks off today at the Comcast Center in Mansfield.

Can you tell a little about The Bravery's involvement with the Projekt Revolution tour and, maybe, about the tour in general?
Well, Linkin Park started it and I think, this year, they're trying to be a little more eclectic with different kinds of bands. I think that's one of the reasons they asked us to do it; we're sort of unlike the normal bands that they have there. They also have Busta Rhymes and Hawthorne Heights and Atreyu and a bunch of emo bands. Chris Cornell. There are a lot of bands and it's something I've never done before. The Linkin Park guys are super cool, friendly guys so there'll be a lot of cookouts, Frisbee, some Hacky Sack.

Boston Herald has an interview with Busta Rhymes who also mentions Linkin Park

You have a new single, "We Made It," with Linkin Park. What came first, the song or the idea to hit the road with each other?
The track came first, and then once we got so much love it made sense to be on tour together so we could perform the record every night.

And Artisan News has an interview with Chris Cornell.

It's something that fans will see and it's the only time they are going to see it. They are not going to see that lineup all at the same show together again ever. So, one of the ways that makes it special and they take that away and they see Busta and Linkin Park doing a song together or they see me come up and sing with some one else's set or something, that's the only time it's going to happen."

Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda critiques fame in an art show at JANM

Downtown LA Scene has an interview with Mike where he talks about his art show at the Japanese American National Museum

I had a couple of these paintings started, and I showed them to my brother and he said, "Oh, you know what this reminds me of is those vanitas paintings." It's actually funny that he recognized that before I did because I took a whole bunch of art history in school.... A lot of the symbols from the vanitas paintings - which included skulls and time and smoke and bubbles, which were all meant to reference the ephemeral nature of life - were already showing up in the paintings: smoke from a cigar, bubbles in champagne, expensive watches and things like that. I was making these paintings as kind of fun, cheeky pop commentary, and that's what it initially started pointing towards. The series actually follows a skeleton character who experiences different versions of fame even though he doesn't have a talent for anything. Full interview

Brockworth students use Linkin Park's music to fight against knife crime
posted by Jas, 07/05/08 | share
Just over a month ago, we, the Harry Potter fans, were shocked to learn that a teenage actor named Robert Knox was stabbed to death trying to protect his younger brother from a knifeman, he had a role in Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince, due for release in November. Rob became the 28th teenager killed in Britain this year, and the 10th in London to die from stab wounds. This is Gloucestershire reports that students at Brockworth Enterprise School has written a song warning of the dangers of carrying knives, they use Linkin Park's 'Numb' as the backing track, see video below.

Teenagers at Brockworth Enterprise School have written and performed a song warning of the dangers of carrying knives. The as yet unnamed song uses the Linkin Park hit Numb as a backing track and has been developed as part of the school's focus on staying safe. This term the pupils, aged 13 and 14, have been studying knife crime and wrote the song in the hope of encouraging young people to stop using blades as weapons. Ravall Douglas, 13, said: "Many young people don't watch the news so music is a way of getting the message across to them that carrying a knife is not worth it. People think it's for protection but it is not. Hopefully our song can make a difference."

Melanie Vaughan, head of citizenship and physical, health and social education at the school, praised the children. "It's amazing, they wrote all the words themselves about how they feel about knives being used and their impact," she said. "From a professional point of view I was amazed at how well they worked to come up with the words and that they truly believe and want others to realise that knife crime is something that should be dealt with." The school now hopes its song could be distributed nationally.

Projekt Revolution at Milton Keynes review
posted by Jas, 07/01/08 | share
Backstage Pass has a review of Projekt Revolution concert at the Milton Keynes Bowl.

Linkin Park closed out the night with an exhausting performance of heavy rock, an advertisement as to why they have sold over forty million albums world-wide. "Somewhere I Belong" and "From the Inside" were the most recognisable of their renditions from a back-catalogue rife with hits. They may have been singing some stellar hits, however the band was showing their delirium from their hectic schedule when lead-singer Charlie Bennington yelled into the microphone as he stared across the crowd, "this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!" In the end, on a weekend in the United Kingdom featuring Glastonbury, Projekt Revolution proved not to be a mere understudy but a classy amalgamation of the genres of hip-hop and rock. Full review.
