Chances are starting to look good that the second (and final) part of my GLORIOUS EXCESS art show will open to the Los Angeles public in the later part of this year. Although dates have not been officially confirmed, the art is coming together nicely. This show follows the story of our anti-hero as he overdoses on celebrity, overdoses on himself, and carves a path to superstar martyrdom. The official announcement and info will be posted here on mikeshinoda.com, of course. As usual, proceeds will go to charity (Music For Relief, Michael K. Shinoda endowed scholarship, JANM).

Linkin Park in the studio
posted by Jas, 03/28/09 | share
Mike has updated his blog with a photo of Rob in the studio and an update on the recording of Linkin Park's new album
We've been working on a new song in the past couple of weeks that has been a lot of fun. The backdrop for the song is built on layered, heavy synths and a sharp performance by Mr. Bourdon. We're keeping the drums a little looser on this track, not doing too much studio trickery...it creates a nice interplay between the organic feel of the rhythm track and the more robotic feel of the keyboards. Bass and guitar are next, meanwhile Chester and I are emailing lyric notes back and forth...

Eric Lewis talks about Linkin Park
posted by Jas, 03/22/09 | share
Ted.com has an interview with jazz pianist Eric Lewis who recently said that when he first listened to Linkin Park, Chester's scream reminds him of John Coltrane. He also said that Linkin Park made him think of Miles Davis and Elvin Jones and Puccini.
I spent a period of time really despondent and upset with trying to fight through it all, and finally I managed to get my technique to a different level. I was listening one day to a record by Linkin Park called Meteora. It was the first time that I had ever purchased a rock record. Prior to that time, I was very much a jazz purist, and that's why I had gone so far in the jazz world. However, that purism didn't work for me. So then I finally broke that habit and checked out Linkin Park on the recommendation of some people who heard me describing something that I wanted to do in music. And it really opened me up.
I heard the song "Somewhere I Belong," and to hear Chester Bennington scream reminded me of Coltrane howling and wailing on the saxophone, and the harmonies they were using reminded me of Miles Davis, and reminded me of Puccini. And then the power of the drums reminded me of Elvin Jones. And the clarity of the bass reminded me of the power of the orchestra. Full interview.
Danny Cocke talks about working with Mike

Sacramenton's local composer, Danny Cocke talks about meeting and working with Mike.
What's the story behind your work with Mike Shinoda?
Simplistic [Cocke's former band] made a four-song demo in September [2000]. It was the first time in a real studio, and we just went and played. We didn't know what the hell was going on—totally newbie kids. We made this demo, and Nick [bassist and vocalist] went to a Linkin Park concert and gave the demo to Mike—they would all come out and talk to the kids. And Mike called us two weeks later and said, "I really like your band; I want to meet you guys." So we went up to Yuba City when they were playing Ozzfest. And he's like, "I really like your guys' stuff. I either want to sign you guys or get you guys signed." Full interview.

Mike & Kenna's new collaboration
posted by Jas, 03/04/09 | share
Mark reports that Kenna will be working with Mike on a new EP entitled "MSTSMF Outtakes"
RJ: What can fans expect to hear on Sounds for Flight? K: The unexpected. It's nothing like anything anyone has heard before. I've already started that as well — I'm two songs in. So that album is definitely going to be an interesting departure. I might actually put one more EP out before those Atlanta Air Chronicles, but I'm not sure yet. I'm just deciding right now. One that's a Make Sure They See My Face revisited that kind of has songs that didn't make the record, and the Cool Kids version of "Loose Wires" and an addendum to "Loose Wires," and the "Black Goodbye Ride" song that I did with Questlove and something I did with Mike Shinoda, and something I did with James Valentine from Maroon 5. We'll see. I'm in the middle of it right now. Thanks To Dre. Full interview.
